Austin -- Texas sophomore WR Darius White has elected to transfer, he confirmed Tuesday. White, who has been given an unconditional release from his scholarship by UT, will depart the program after two seasons, but has not yet determined where he will transfer. He will not travel to the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
"I sat down and talked to my mother and family and came to the conclusion that I really just need a fresh start," White said. "Texas is a great school with great players and great coaches, but I just need somewhere I can get a new start. I've got great teammates – my wide receiver teammates, my teammates on offense and the whole team – and I'm still going to be rooting for them. All the coaches are great and taught me a lot. I learned a lot from coach [Bobby] Kennedy, coach [Darrell] Wyatt, coach [Bryan] Harsin, coach [Mack] Brown and all of the coaches. They all taught me how to be a better man. It's a difficult decision right now, but I'm just looking forward to making a difference at place with a new start."
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, White is a second-year receiver who has seen action in 20 career games and has six receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown, with five of those receptions coming in 2011. As a senior at Dunbar High School, White was named to the PARADE All-America High School Football Team, tabbed first-team All-USA by USA Today and an EA SPORTS All-American third-team selection, and played in the 2010 Under Armour All-America Game.
"We never like to see anyone leave, but at the same time we understand Darius' desire for a fresh start," head coach Mack Brown said. "We appreciate everything Darius contributed while he was here and wish him the best of luck as he moves forward."
