Longhorns place 17 on 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team

Austin -- The Big 12 Conference named its 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team, and The University of Texas had 17 honorees overall, including 13 on the first team, which was the second most in the conference. The first-team selections included junior LB Emmanuel Acho, senior DE Sam Acho, junior LB Dravannti Johnson, senior LB Dustin Earnest, senior DB Mark Fisher, senior P John Gold, sophomore WR Marquise Goodwin, redshirt freshman DT Calvin Howell, sophomore RB Tre’ Newton, redshirt freshman OL Garrett Porter, senior TE Greg Smith, junior RB Fozzy Whittaker and junior DS Alex Zumberge. This is the third straight year Sam Acho, Earnest and Gold earned first-team honors, while it is the second straight year for EmmanuelAcho, Smith and Whittaker. Smith has been on the overall team each of the last four years after being selected to the second team in his first two years. Fisher and Newton were also on the second team last season.
The second team included sophomore FB Jamison Berryhill, sophomore QB Garrett Gilbert, junior DB Cody Hill and senior OG Michael Huey. This is Berryhill’s second straight selection to the second team. Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the football academic all-league squad consisted of 100 first team members combined with 70 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or for the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. |
