Offensive coordinator Greg Davis
On the game: For the ninth year in a row, 10 or more wins. What an accomplishment. It says a great deal about Mack and his consistency and the loyalty to the program, the consistent work ethic. It's quite a feat, considering it's the second longest in the history of college football. What a great way to start the ballgame with an 80-yard drive. We had a good mixture between the run and the pass culminated with the short touchdown throw from Colt McCoy to Jordan Shipley. There are a lot of things we're excited about.
On the running game: First of all, over 200 yards rushing. Cody Johnson had his first extended time. He really stepped up big and had 109 yards rushing. He really played well, especially early in the ballgame when we were trying to establish a tempo. Tre' Newton came in and had over 80 yards rushing, but the biggest thing is, as a group, they rushed the ball for an average of 6.4 yards per carry, which is an outstanding job. That's what we need, the balance we need to be able to be the offense we want to be to help win all of the football games.
On the receivers and Colt McCoy: A lot of receivers caught balls. Dan Buckner I think had five catches. James Kirkendoll and Jordan Shipley both came up big. Shipley had two touchdown catches. There were a lot of good things in the ballgame. You've got to be excited for Colt McCoy. He ties David Greene as the winningest quarterback in the history NCAA football. Hopefully he'll be able to get that record here at home next weekend when we play Kansas on senior day.
On the offensive line: I'm really proud of our offensive line. We challenged them big time during the week last week in practice. We kind of simplified what we were doing in the run game. We said these are the runs that we're going to focus on - weak side zone play, the counter play, the one back power and they really came out and did a good job. Across the board I thought Adam Ulatoski, Charlie Tanner, Chris Hall, Michael Huey and Kyle Hix along with Greg Smith at tight end really came up big and gave Cody and Tre' some great creases to get the ball into the secondary.
On Tre' Newton's touchdown run: On Tre' Newton's 45-yard touchdown run, we ran a fast tempo. We hurried to the line and ran the weak side zone from underneath. The line did a great job and when Tre' got about six or seven yards deep into the secondary, he was one-on-one with the safety. He made a little move, beat the safety, and after that it was clear sailing.
On having Tre' Newton back: It was good to have Tre' Newton back. After having to sit out and win his job back so to speak after having a concussion, we're really pleased with the way he's coming on. He has outstanding vision and great patience as we talked about earlier on the 45-yard touchdown run. With he, Cody and Fozzy (Whittaker) came in late in the ballgame and did some good things, as well as Vondrell McGee. As we've said many times, to go the distance in the Big 12, you need a stable of running backs. All of them will get their opportunities, but it was really good to see Tre' back on the field.
On the seven-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipley: On the second touchdown pass between Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley, we expected Baylor to come after us, so we were in a maximum protection situation, and we ran a little play where we've done all year long where Jordan Shipley goes out and blocks for the wide receiver. This was a companion play where Jordan Shipley goes out, acts like he's going to block, and slips deep into the end zone. It worked fine. Colt threw a great ball. Protection was good. Result, we were up 28 to nothing.
On being up 40-0 at halftime: It was probably our best first half of play all year, over 300 yards in the first half, five touchdowns. If there was anything we were disappointed in, I wish we would've come out and established that same tempo to start the second half. We're growing as a football team. We're growing as an offense. I really see us peaking at the right time.
On Kansas: I look forward to Kansas coming in next week. It's senior day; it's always an emotional time. If you look at the record of these seniors, it's phenomenal. Their last time to play here at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, so I know our fans will be excited. Kansas is a team that is explosive. They're led by a young man from here in Austin, Texas, - Todd Reesing, who is an outstanding player in his own right. It should be an exciting afternoon, and one we're looking forward to it.
Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp
On the Baylor game: The opening drive they had us off balance in the screen game. They did a nice job; we didn't do a nice of job of covering down on the receivers. We got out-leveraged in the formation, but huge play by A.J. Williams. It was a phenomenal interception. I'm really proud of that effort. Great players need to stand up in those situations, and he made a great play.
On Aaron Williams' interception: We were in a max pressure, and they ran a man beater, which our call was not a good call for what they ran, and he fought through it and made a tremendous play to high point the ball in the back of the end zone. Again, we had good pressure on the play, so we kind of forced the poor throw, but Aaron made a phenomenal play.
On holding the Baylor offense after the first drive: We dominated the line of scrimmage. We felt like we would going into the ballgame. They're kind of a quick hit offense in what they do, and if we took those things away, we would have a good opportunity to put our offense in great situations, which is what we did.
On limiting David Gettis and Kendall Wright: Kendall Wright caught a pump and go late in the game. That was really the only vertical play they had in the passing game the entire day, so that was nice to see. I wish we had finished the game a little bit better. Giving up 14 points on the last two drives, those guys when they get their opportunities they've got o play better. They understand what standard we have at The University of Texas on defense, and that's not going to be accepted.
On Lamarr Houston's impact: Lamarr has been a disruptive force all year. He really has played well for us. He had two sacks in the game. He's been making negative plays all year. We've got him on the move a lot, and that's what he does best. He's an outstanding athlete, and he really is a big figure in what we are trying to do this year.
On holding Baylor to six yards rushing: Again, we had a lot of negative plays. The NCAA counts sacks as a rushing play, which we don't, but I think we had with our stats over one yard a carry offensively, which is really good. Again, we met our passing goal as well. We didn't give up any big plays until there late. I'm really pleased with our effort.
On forcing turnovers: We had a great stop on downs, Dustin Earnest with a heads up play on the fourth down. The three interceptions are huge in the game. Of course scoring on defense is big. Eddie Jones made a great interception on a flare pass which is very difficult to do. Emmanuel Acho played his coverage perfectly and really made a nice interception. I wish he had gotten to the sideline, I think he might have outrun them all. Of course Aaron's interception was a huge play for us in the game.
On Sam Acho's forced fumble for a safety: We had a forced fumble there and Sam Acho makes the play there in the end zone, I wish we had scooped that one up, we could have converted that into bigger points than a safety. Again, great effort, negative plays are always huge for us getting behind in the chains. I'm real proud of our effort defensively.
On Kansas: We're looking forward to getting ready for Kansas and Todd Reesing. He's an Austin native and an outstanding player. Kerry Meier and Briscoe are two outstanding wide outs kind of like we faced this past week, so they'll definitely challenge us this week. We're looking forward to that opportunity here in Royal-Memorial Stadium.
