TEXAS

HEAD COACH MACK BROWN
Opening statement: I’m really proud of the guys today, to come out on the road with emotion after last week’s Oklahoma game. The receivers played great. We protected the ball really well and in the second half we broke the turnover jinx we had. We got three turnovers. They say they come in bunches.

On the game: The only bad thing about today is Gene Chizik was on the other sideline and we care a lot about him. After last week, you want to get your confidence going. We started the season over after Oklahoma, and they got a good start today.

On Coach Chizik: They caught us today after Oklahoma, and we played really well. They are getting small victories and the longer Chizik stays here the better they will be.

On the losing streak: [The four-game losing streak] is a farce, because those are two different teams, talking about last year’s team and this year’s team. We are just trying to get back on track.

On Colt McCoy’s run: We didn’t want Colt to run it anymore. We wanted him to keep throwing and get in rhythm and get his confidence going into the rest of the season. He has [scrambled] all year. He’s made a lot of plays off of his feet and we have worked on the scramble coverage a lot.

QB COLT MCCOY
I felt like we played well last week. Our O-line played their best game so far. They gave me a lot of time in the pocket.

On snapping Big 12 losing streak: It was really important for us. To come out of the week and get turnovers and not give them up was really important.

This week in practice Coach said we’re starting a new season. We didn’t feel like we played at the standard we could play at. If we can build on that we’ll have a great second half of the season.

On the spread offense: We hadn’t executed very well in the past two weeks. The spread is a big part of our offense, so when Coach Davis said we’d throw the football around, it put a smile on my face. We executed that well and that’s what won us the game.

CB BRANDON FOSTER
We practiced really hard this week. We were really happy to have that carry over into game.

On Coach Chizik: It was not about beating Coach Chizik. We were just looking to get a solid win. This was a business trip. We love Coach Chizik.

On his touchdown: We kept getting hands on the ball, and we knew it would fall our way eventually.

IOWA STATE

HEAD COACH GENE CHIZIK
Opening statement: I think when you’re in this situation you try to point out some positive things. At the end of the game when it was way out of hand I thought our kids continued to fi ght. You try to find a positive in a very negative afternoon. I think our kids fought down to the end and showed a lot of character. They never quit. We’ll move on and try to get better.

Texas has great athletes and great coaches. Mack Brown is a classy man. He is a phenomenal football coach, one of the best if not the best in the country. Most programs would aspire to be something like them. Today I thought that was evident. They coached well and they played well. I have to give him a lot of credit.

I really don’t know what to expect. Every time we lose it’s difficult. Today was especially difficult in the way we lost. They executed and we didn’t.

On Coach Brown: I wish I would have been able to shake hands in a different venue. I knew he didn’t enjoy today. He means everything to me. He could of made that a lot worse. He’s all about class and character.

I thought we did a poor job with the coaching and starting with me. We had some pass rush on Colt (McCoy), but he got out of some things. I just thought today on defense we didn’t show up. We weren’t even in the ballpark.

A missed field goal right now is disappointing. We felt we were in field goal range and that’s one he (Culbertson) should hit. We covered punts well. We didn’t always kick them well. When you play the field position battle with a team like that, then they score 60 on you, which is exactly what happened today.

We’re analyzing everyday. Bret (Meyer) didn’t have a good day but that doesn’t always equate to Bret’s fault. We’re going to go back and evaluate and see what our next step is. I’m ready to play the guys that give us a chance to win. Everything we do as a coaching staff will be in the best interest of our team, not one guy.

On talking with Coach Brown after the game: He just said hang in there and things will get better. I’m sure we’ll talk again soon.

QB BRET MEYER
Obviously we are frustrated, but we have five games left in the season. We just need to keep our heads up and continue to improve each week. I’m not worried about having a great send off for my senior year. You can’t put your head down; you have to keep battling each week. We knew Texas had a lot of talent but we have talent on our team as well. It just comes down to execution.

T DOUG DEDRICK
We’re working hard and everyone is fighting. I don’t know what happened, but we will figure it out tomorrow. We started getting into Big 12 play and everyone is trying to step up. We’re working hard. Collectively as a team we made some mistakes that we shouldn’t have made. We have to get back on track tomorrow. Losing is as frustrating as anything. It’s not fun. We’ll go back to work and figure out how to win.

They were quick on the ends and they were definitely more speed rush kind of guys.

On the locker room mood: We lost, so it wasn’t happy. At the same time, everyone stayed in it until the end. We really fought all the way up to the last whistle. We have to make corrections. We have to figure it out and get back to work tomorrow.

OLB ACE BOWEN
On Colt McCoy: He’s like a normal quarterback, get pressure on him and make plays on him. We knew if he scrambled he was going to look down the field for another receiver. Texas didn’t really do anything we weren’t prepared for.

They had some talented receivers. It’s going back to playing our defense and being fundamentally sound. If we’re not, then that is what is going to happen.

It is never hard to get motivated, it’s football. If it’s hard to get motivated, you’re doing the wrong thing.

On next week against Oklahoma: If we don’t play harder and smarter, then we’re going to get blown out again. We have to come to play every game. I don’t think we came to play today.

We have the athletes to make plays. We’re not doing anything scientific, we’re not doing anything major, we’re playing football. People need to realize that and step up and make plays.
