Kansas State game quotes
TEXAS HEAD COACH MACK BROWN On Colt McCoy at halftime: We weren’t sure he was going to play. Then they said he could and the doctors took him out at the end of the game. On what made the difference: It just seems like we missed too many tackles throughout the day. We seemed to handle the pressure okay, but the tipped balls killed us. I think that there were three tipped balls and Colt got hit on another one of the interceptions. On playing Oklahoma next week: We just have to do the best we can do to get rid of this one in 24 hours like we did in the four wins that we have and get ready to play OU. On Texas having close games: You have to play hard every week. You have to play well every week. Like I have said, I think it is more exciting for college football fans and better for you guys and harder for coaches. On the second half: We started the second half and really throughout the third quarter I thought we did really really well. We got it back to three points then we had the turnover and held them. We did a great job with the defense holding it to six and then they return a punt for a touchdown. It seems like every time the kids would come back, there would be something that Kansas State would do to take it away and again give them credit for that. On Colt McCoy: Colt made some great plays tonight as well. I think the tipped balls really hurt him. On what he needs to do: What you do when you lose, you go back and look at everything. We will be doing that tonight. On the running game: Nobody has run well against them all year, but it wasn’t very good. When you get behind like we did, it’s hard to run. It makes it worse. It also hurts with the tipped balls. On the combination John Chiles and Colt McCoy: Yeah I thought it was good. We may have to continue to look at it more. I thought John did some good things when he came in. We actually had a double pass called when he got tackled for the loss. On the second half: To come back out and to have a 10-point deficit and to have the ball in your hands was tough with all the rain and it was hard to get it rolling, but we came out of that. We got the game back to three. Again the kids played really hard. They came back out in the second half and fought their guts out. The defense played hard even though we weren’t moving the ball and had the interceptions. It’s not the kids. They tried as hard as they can try. On talking to Colt McCoy at halftime: He had to go with the doctors. We didn’t get to talk to him at all at halftime. We didn’t talk to him until he came back out in the second half and they said he was going to have to run around a little bit and then they said he could play. On Kansas State: They played great. We have seen them play great twice. They didn’t throw the ball deep, but they did a great job controlling the underneath passing game. You really look at it they didn’t move the ball either. They had 270 total yards and scored with kicking game and turnovers. You can talk about how great they did on offense, but really it was turnovers and the kicking game that made the difference in this game, period. On Steve Moore: He did a good job. I think he has punted three times this year and he has done a good job on all three. We just can’t miss tackles when he punts well. On Justin Moore’s punts: I thought his punts were fine. In fact I think we missed two or three tackles. They took it to the field and did a great job. Jordy Nelson is really a good player. He is hard to tackle, he is 6-3, 215. or something, he is really good player. He is a lot better player than people know he is. OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR GREG DAVIS On Kansas State’s defense: Their defense is a good defense. Their defense is good and we felt like that during the week and they played well tonight. CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR DUANE AKINA On what the defense needs to work on: I’m just looking at the numbers here, and I think the biggest thing is that we’ve got to create more turnovers ourselves. We’ve got to evaluate where we were on the special teams because we just can’t give up those kinds of chunks in a game like that. OL TONY HILLS On Colt McCoy’s confidence: Anytime you can take a shot like that and get up like he did and then come up and try to rally your team back that tells me there’s no confidence lost in him or our confidence in him. He is our guy and we’re going to ride with him throughout the rest of this season and he’s going to do a great job for us. On Colt McCoy in the second half: He seemed fired up. I don’t think there was any difference. He was fired up from the get go and then he came out and was fired up. He’s always telling us we need to make these plays count and we try to do that to the best of our abilities. DT FRANK OKAM On the defense: If you look at it critically we did miss some tackles, but the guys out there were trying really hard. And I think sometimes when you try real hard you lose sight of your fundamentals, and we were taking bad angles. They’re all things that are correctable and we just have to do it. WR NATE JONES On the loss: Kansas State was a good team. They came out there and they did everything they had to do to get the win. We just have to go back to work tomorrow and get in the film room, just stay focused and continue to work. We have a big game next week as well and we just have to go in the film room and continue to work. On refocusing for Oklahoma next weekend: We have to refocus, and we have to refocus tomorrow. We have to get in the film room and study OU and just watch the game we just played today. You learn from your mistakes and this coming week is going to be big for us. On if they matched Kansas State's physicality: I think we matched up with them. That's the most important thing we talked about is that they were going to come in here and be physical. They came in and give us a fight. We just have to continue to work and everybody has to refocus. On the momentum of the game: We had momentum coming out in the opening drive of the second half and then they came back and changed the momentum right back. Today they did a lot of things to stop us from turning our offense on. RB JAMAAL CHARLES On the confidence of Colt McCoy: He is real good. We just have to come back and get some more plays made and work on all the plays that we messed up on. We have to come back strong. On how this loss affects their season: We just have to come back and win all of our games. We lost one, so it's time to wake up and play the rest of them. WR QUAN COSBY On having no time to think about it because of the upcoming game with Oklahoma: Yeah, there is no time. There are really good teams in the Big 12. There are really good teams all over, especially in our conference. You definitely have to let it go and move on. On the tipped balls: You really can’t explain it. It’s one of those things where you don’t go into a football game and say we have to stop them from tipping the ball. It’s one of those crazy things that happens, so you have to adjust and hope for something positive. On the momentum of the game: We had momentum at certain times, but they had the same thing and kept rolling. You have to tip your hat to them because they played an outstanding game and they’re going to have a really good year. LB SCOTT DERRY On the disappointment of the loss: We still have a lot of football ahead of us and a big game next week. We can’t dwell on this one for too long. On the special teams: I can’t really tell you form the perspective of the kick return, but on the punt return that they had, they just had what we call a wall return and once the guy hits it, it’s hard to penetrate it. DT DEREK LOKEY On playing against a short field: It’s a difficult situation. It’s hard for a defense to stop an offense that has a short field one time, but to stop them three or four or five times in a row is almost impossible. I think we were pretty resilient as far as that goes tonight. We have to do some things better, we shouldn’t have let them score on the first drive. There are a lot of things that we need to do better as a team. On next week: There’s a huge game coming up next week, because it’s the next one. We can’t let this game beat us twice. We’re going to be pretty down tonight, watch the film and get this one out of our system. We’re going to come back out on Monday and work a little harder. On the game: We never really as a team put together anything that caused momentum. If the defense made a stop, the offense wouldn’t get anything together. If the offense would score, the defense couldn’t get a stop. We never strung it together, as a team, as a unit, and that’s what I think made this game so difficult. S MARCUS GRIFFIN On refocusing for next week: Our main focus is we don’t want to let one loss make us have two losses. We’re going to come back to work on Sunday, review film, correct our mistakes and get back to work on Tuesday. On the mood of the locker room: Any time you lose it’s a horrible feeling, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing. On Jordy Nelson: He’s a very good player. I remember him from last year; he made a lot of big plays. He’s a senior this year, and he’s trying to go out with a bang. KANSAS STATE HEAD COACH RON PRINCE When we came out in the second half, I was very concerned because many teams have been in this exact same position at the half. Texas is like the New York Yankees. Everybody gives them their very best every week. RUNNING BACK JAMES JOHNSON OL BROCK UNRUH LB JUSTIN ROLAND
