Visiting with Vince: August 29
On the anticipation of getting the season started Saturday: I am looking forward to it. I am tired of looking at that defense right now. We have another opponent to go against, and it is time to get ourselves prepared and get ready for them. I am looking forward to practice today, and the game plan that Coach Davis has for us this week. On preparing for Louisiana-Lafayette: As I have been watching film, I see that those guys are very aggressive. They like to get in your face. That is going to challenge our team and our heart. We will see how we respond to that. I am looking forward to see how the guys are going to respond in going against another team. On the vertical passing game: We will just take what the defense gives us. If they leave it open, we will take they the opportunity to go down field with it. If not, we will drop the ball down and just be careful with the ball. I need to not throw the ball into the defense's hands. On developing a deep threat: Basically we'll use our speed we have with the wide receivers and tight ends. We need to get them down field. We need to mix it up and give them different looks. A lot of defenses leave the next man open when they see the tight end go downfield. I have to take it upon myself in the film room to know why coach is calling a certain play. On how he can relate to Selvin Young's situation: I know how he felt last year. As a redshirt freshman sitting back and watching Chris Simms, it was real hard. It hurts when you are a competitor and you want to go out there. I know how Selvin felt sitting at home in his boot watching the game. I know he wanted to be out there playing. Now he is getting the opportunity now to go out there and showcase his talent. Everybody knows what he can do. They saw him the two years he played. Now he's trying to go out there and see if he can finish a whole season. Mainly as a friend and a roommate, I want to see him go out there and have fun and play the game that he loves. On his improvements in the passing game: I feel that with all of our receivers and backs getting open, I am being more careful with the ball. I am taking my time and the game is slowing down a whole lot for me. I am just taking what the defense gives me. If it is not there, I'll drop it down or use my legs. I think I am doing a great job with that overall. Coach likes it. They like me throwing the ball downfield right now. I am getting the ball downfield and getting it to the shorter routes. It is giving them more opportunities to call different plays on offense. How much the receivers and I worked out during the summer is paying off now. On Ramonce Taylor and how he helps the offense: He is a big threat to our defense. A lot of people say you have to watch me, but if you don't watch that guy he is taking it 60 or 70 yards at anytime. Right now he is doing a whole lot to our defense. He is giving them a good picture because a lot of teams have different athletes on the offensive side of the ball. Ramonce is doing a great job making plays, and Coach Davis is doing a great job of getting the ball into his hands with the different plays we have for him. On the improvements at wide receiver: Limas Sweed is more physical now. He is using his hands and reaching out for it. He is using his frame well. He is doing what the coaches and everybody on the team wanted to see out of him. Billy Pittman, with his speed has been doing a great job running routes. Brian Carter is just a veteran senior who knows what to do. There are different guys in our offense that can get open when we need them to at the right time. They're accepting their roles right now, and that is what we need out of them. We need somebody to step up when their play gets called. On the importance of David Thomas: David Thomas is always going to be a very important factor in our offense because of the type of game he has and the speed he has for a tight end and his physical ability. David Thomas is going to catch the ball, and he is going to make a big play. He is another guy just like RT (Ramonce Taylor). He is a big threat in our offense.
