Brown named to 2012 Maxwell Award Watch List

Texas Longhorns sophomore running back Malcolm Brown has been added to the watch list for the 2012 Maxwell Award, honoring the nation's outstanding collegiate football player, the Maxwell Football Club has announced. Four Texas players have won the Maxwell in the history of the award with QB Colt McCoy being the latest Longhorn to take home the trophy in 2009. He was the third Longhorn Maxwell Award winner in 12 seasons, joining QB Vince Young (2005) and RB Ricky Williams (1998). Linebacker Tommy Nobis was the first Longhorn to win the Maxwell in 1965. The Maxwell Award has been given to America's outstanding collegiate football player since 1937, and is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell. Brown begins his second season after having played in 10 games with seven starts as a true freshman in 2011. He was named second-team Freshman All-America by Yahoo!Sports, the 2011 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year (AP, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram) and the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year (Kansas City Star). Brown is one of 13 Texas freshmen to rush for over 500 yards in a season, ranks seventh on the single season rushing yards (742) list for freshmen and is tied for ninth for rushing touchdowns (5) as a frosh. In 2011, he tallied 172 carries for 742 yards to lead the team and had five rushing touchdowns while catching three passes for 17 yards. Brown ranked second among true freshmen in the NCAA and was eighth overall in the Big 12 with 74.2 rushing yards per game. He was the first true freshman to lead Texas in rushing since Cedric Benson in 2001 and was the team's leading rusher in eight of the 13 games. Brown has three career 100-yard rushing performances, tied for third most by Longhorn freshmen. He was on the College Football Performance Awards National Freshman Performer of the Year watch list and was a prep All-American who played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced October 29, and the three finalists will be unveiled November 19. The winner of the 2012 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on December 6. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 1, 2013. The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, evaluating past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the right to make additions and deletions to these lists as the 2012 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the award. |
