What did you think of working with Jordan Shipley’s camp?
These kids are having a great time and I’m enjoying being around them. I’m trying to teach them some stuff – a little bit of fundamentals. I think that’s the most important thing when you’re young like this is to get out and learn the fundamentals of football, not just position-oriented, but to learn the entire game.
How did you get involved with the camp?
Jordan texted me about two weeks ago and asked me if I could do it. Obviously, I knew this would be a lot of fun working with Jordan and him coming back. The kids love him and I thought it would be a lot of fun.
Have you ever worked with kids before?
I’ve done a couple things here and there with them. Just being able to teach them and learn a little bit from them is a lot of fun.
How are summer workouts going?
The seniors have really taken a leadership role. Seven-on-seven is going really well. I’ve enjoyed being able to get out there and get timing back with the receivers and compete against the guys and really get after it. It’s become like a rivalry with the offense and defense, so we’re having a good time.
How do summer workouts prepare you for the season?
This is the hottest time of the year, and obviously two-a-days will still be tough, but being able to get out there and work in the sun and run and lift will prepare us more than anything.
What have you seen from the freshmen this summer in terms of adjusting to being in college?
They’re doing well. There’s an adjustment period, but they’re really getting into it and stepping in. Obviously, a lot of them want to earn playing time, so they’re trying to do the best they can to get their reps at 7-on-7 and show Mad Dog that they can work during the workouts.
What does Coach Madden do during the summer workouts to help build the team’s endurance?
We run quarters around the field or we run 100s, you rarely run that far during a play in football, but the endurance of that will keep us going in the fourth quarters of games. That’s what Mad Dog always talks about – the fourth quarter and getting after it. That’s really important for us to have that endurance and be in great shape.
How valuable is it to you as a student to be able to be on campus and take classes in the summer while working out with the team?
It’s invaluable to be able to get those hours in during the summer and be able to get some of those classes in to be able to stay ahead with your grades.
