Meet the freshmen Q&A: Bryce Cottrell

June 21, 2012

Why did you decide to play football at Texas? It is closer to my family and my mom and everybody loves Texas, too. I just thought it was the better pick for me in the long run.

What are your thoughts about defensive ends coach Oscar Giles? I have known him because of Jackson Jeffcoat - we both went to the same school. [Giles] has been talking to me a little bit, and I have become closer with him. He is a really nice guy and a good coach that has put players in the NFL.

Were you familiar with the legacy of Texas linemen going to the NFL? Oh yes, definitely. There is a great legacy of defense from Texas. There is Sergio Kindle, Sam Acho, and tons of others. They have never had more defensive ends than they do right now [in the NFL.}

What goals have you set for yourself to make sure you follow those guys to the NFL? I will have to get used to playing defensive end first. I played safety my sophomore year, then linebacker my junior year and I played a little bit of end my senior year. So I just have to get used to it and learn the fundamentals of it and practice my technique. And obviously get a little bigger.

What are your goals for the summer and getting ready for fall? Basically be the best that I can be and hopefully make the team and be on the travel squad. If not, I will get redshirted and will still get an education, which isn't a bad thing. My ultimate goal in life is to get everything you can from education because football is not forever.

Do you think you are ready for the differences of college life from high school? Oh definitely. Our school is one of the top schools in the country, and they get us ready for stuff like this. So far, I love the classes, and I think they are some of the best classes ever.

What are your thoughts on Coach Brown? Best coach in the world. He really sold me coming to this school. Just with the whole family environment and everything. He is always saying, "It is not only about me, it is about we." That is one thing that I love about this team.

What advice did your family give you about starting college? You're not coming home, so do your best and hopefully everything will work out. [laughs]

What do you think it will feel like the first time you run out of the tunnel at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium? Amazing. I am going to be speechless, and it'll be weird but I'm going to love it.
