Vaccaro NFL Combine Q & A

March 3, 2013

What was your experience like at the NFL Combine?
It was a draining four days. The medical and the interviews were a lot. Ultimately though, it was a good combine for me, and I’m glad I got to do it.

Did your training at Texas help with the Combine interviews and media?
Yes, I was definitely prepared. The media here helped, and [assistant head coach/defensive backs] Coach [Duane] Akina has me so well prepared for the next level.

What was your training like leading up to the Combine?
I trained in Irvine, Calif. with Athletes First. In the mornings I would do movement assessments, then strength assessments, then I’d do some fieldwork. Basically what every athlete was doing to prepare. The main thing for me was the nutrition change – we cut out all the fats and sugars and got really lean.

How did practice and training at Texas prepare you for the Combine and the NFL?
Coach Akina has always taught us to practice hard. That’s been here with me since I was a freshman. It really helped me during interviews talking about practice, and it really helped me at the Combine – knowing how to be disciplined and execute each drill.

Did you run into Longhorns WR Marquise Goodwin and DE Alex Okafor at the Combine?
I saw them all from time to time at the hotel. But we were all so busy that we didn’t see each other too much. But we wished each other well and would shoot each other texts from time to time.

Did you talk to Marquise Goodwin about running the fastest 40-yard dash at the 2013 Combine?
I asked him what I should be thinking about when I get up there and what things I should do. I’m actually going to go train a bit with Marquise. I’m going to run the 40 again, I didn’t run the time I wanted to. It wasn’t a bad time, but I think I can do better. I’m going to go train with Marquise and get my 40 time down.

Did you speak with any former Longhorns in the NFL during the Combine process?
A lot of those guys reached out to me – [Tennessee Titans S] Michael Griffin, [Oakland Raiders S] Michael Huff, and [Seattle Seahawks S] Earl [Thomas] said some stuff to me. They really helped me out. They told me just relax and everything will be fine.

What will you be doing between now and Texas’ Pro Day?
I’m just going to train really hard for Pro Day. Then I’m going to do my team business and team workouts. Just get ready to accomplish my dream.

What are your expectations for draft day?
My goal is to be the first safety taken in the first round. That’s my ultimate goal. I don’t care where or what team I play for.
