Jan. 8, 2013

Austin -- The University of Texas was ranked 18th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, and 19th in the final Associated Press Poll released Tuesday.

The Longhorns finish the season ranked in the coaches poll for the 13th time in Mack Brown's 15 seasons, including 12 times in the Top 20. Texas is one of only three schools to be ranked in the coaches poll 13 times in the last 15 years, along with Virginia Tech and Florida. In the 15 years prior to Brown's arrival, UT finished in the Top 25 of the coaches poll just six times, including four in the Top 20.

Texas has also finished the year ranked among the AP Top 25 in 13 of Brown’s 15 years, including 12 Top 20 rankings. The Longhorns are again one of only three schools to finish in 13 of the last 15 polls, however in the AP, the group includes Virginia Tech and Georgia.

Texas' run also includes a string of 12 straight years in the Top 25, which marked the first time in school history UT had accomplished that, bettering the previous record of eight straight (1968-75). The Longhorns finished in the Top 25 of the AP Poll just five times in the 15 years prior to Brown's arrival, including three in the Top 20.

In addition to those two polls, Texas finished 23rd in the BCS final standings this season and is the only team in the nation to be ranked in those standings 13 out of the last 14 years. The Longhorns lead the nation with 102 appearances in the rankings, which are nine ahead of Florida and Oklahoma.

In 2012, along with completing his 15th season at Texas, Brown finished his 29th overall as a head coach. He led the Longhorns to a 9-4 mark and a victory over Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl, making his record 150-43 at Texas, and 236-117-1 overall. The 236 wins rank 11th all-time. Brown is one of three active FBS head coaches to reach the 200-win plateau, along with Frank Beamer and Steve Spurrier. He is also one of only two head coaches in the FBS, along with Beamer, to lead his team to 20 bowl games in 21 seasons and 22 winning seasons in the last 23 years.
