Kansas State quotes
Nov. 7, 2010
On Coach Brown's feelings coming into the game: I thought we would win. I knew we had not played well against Kansas State, but I thought this would be a good place to turn it around - on Senior Day and on the road. This is a well coached team. I even thought we would win the second half. Obviously, I missed it and I am really disappointed. The kids are still trying. They are disappointed. They are embarrassed. They are fighting and trying. We just have to make more plays.
On whether there was any surprises Kansas State presented: The offense surprised us because the [regular] quarterback did not play. We knew that number seven [Collin Klein] was a good runner and that they put him in some on third down, but we did not expect to see him every snap. I thought the guys did a much better job on him in the second half.
On the play of Kansas State RB Daniel Thomas: Daniel is a great player. He will be a great pro player. He makes plays every week. Our goal was to keep him under 100 yards which we knew would be really tough. The quarterback hurt us and it opened up some things for Daniel. He is a great player. I told him after the game that he would be in the NFL.
On if the team is lacking confidence: I think getting our confidence back is our biggest problem right now. They just are not playing with confidence. We had a fake field goal, and we faked everybody out but the snap was high. We went down to score at the end of the half and maybe seven points turns things around, but we throw the interception with time left on the clock. We just do not have any confidence at all and that is on the coaches. That is on me more than anything else. We have had teams that have played with confidence, but this one is not.
On the performance of QB Garrett Gilbert: He played so well last week and made some progress. His first interception was tipped, and I thought he was going to get it to Marquise [Goodwin] to score because the cornerback bit, but the linebacker's hand got up and they intercepted it. He has not had much luck. Hopefully he can continue to get better and have more luck at home. Garrett is as tough as nails. He is a guy that will let one play go and come back and play the next. That is what your quarterback has to do. He has to have a short memory, and he does that. I know he is hurting tonight, but we have to help him.
On his team's mentality after the loss: I told the kids not to give up and that if any of them were thinking about it, it would affect the rest of their lives. They cannot give up. The tough times are when people really define who they are. I am going to stay strong here and I am going to compete as their head coach, and they need to do the same. When your back is to the wall, when you are struggling and when everybody is pointing at you, that is when you better stand up and stay strong.
QB Garrett Gilbert
On Texas's goals for the rest of the season: Right now, our goal has got to be to get bowl eligible. Obviously, that is not a goal that, at the beginning of the season, that we had our sights on. But that is where we are right now, and we cannot pick our circumstances. We have to deal with what we got. We are going to look at the film because there is plenty of stuff to learn from it. We have just got to move forward.
OT Britt Mitchell
S Blake Gideon
LB Keenan Robinson
DE Sam Acho
On the mentality of the locker room following the loss: It is frustrating because this is not Texas football that we are playing. We know we have fighters so we are going to fight.
LB Emmanual Acho
On the frame of mind of the team following the loss to Kansas State: We are in a hole, and we are scrapping to get out of it. We are trying to fight it. We are just worried about getting the next win.
On what needs to occur to move forward: I am a little disappointed, but at the same time there is no time to be. We cannot dwell on the past. We have to focus on the next team and make sure this does not happen again.
On running the ball the majority of the game: If it gets you in the end zone then keep with it. I would be a little upset if we would have changed course if it is working. We did not go into the ballgame planning to run it all day and throw it for nine yards. A great deal of it was that our defense was playing so darn well and getting turnovers. We did not get into the end zone on all of those turnovers, so it is not like we knocked them dead. The score was such that [it] allowed us to not take any chances. If you are running it OK then keep running it OK.
On QB Collin Klein: I thought Collin played well. He had a few mishaps early but besides that he was good.
On DB Stephen Harrison: I think all of our secondary played quite well. They have come along well and seem to get better and better as the season goes along. They played well.
On the team's attitude after the win: It is better than the alternative. Still it is the same thing - they are excited and I want them to be that. I would not be very consistent if I concentrated with the wins and losses. I just want them to get better, and I think we did. That is where my interests are involved.
On the seniors: Wel,l as I said early in the week, I feel good for the kids and their parents. They are a good group of guys. I just feel badly that I did not have a longer period of time with them. They have taken good care of themselves. As I have said, there is 22 of them and 13 have already graduated. So they have done the right things and taken care of business. I am proud of them for that as well for how they played tonight.
Kansas State QB Collin Klein
On having only nine passing yards: I think that just getting that "W" is the most important thing. We did what we needed to win. With all of the short fields, we didn't have to pass and were able to just punch it in.
On finding out he was starting only 30 minutes before the game: My head was kind of swimming as it was, but again, our team prepared very hard this week. Hats off to Texas. They are an excellent ballclub across the board, and we have had rough nights like that too. We have got to just keep preparing and keep trying to get better.
RB Daniel Thomas
On the confidence level during the game: We just did not want to go out with a loss with it being our last game. So that was our main focus going into the game. Everyone was focused on going out and winning.
On the meaning of beating Texas: Texas is Texas. They are always going to be a good team. Regardless of their record, they are still going to have the best players that can start on any team in the country. A win over Texas is as good as a win over anybody else.
OL Wade Weibert
K Josh Cherry
On having six wins and being bowl eligible: No matter if it is Texas or anybody, right now we are six wins and bowl eligible. That is something that us seniors have not done since we have been in college here. Nobody has been to a bowl game here, so it is definitely emotional. We are so happy that we won, but it is great knowing that we are going out on our last game here knowing that we have a chance to go to a bowl now.
S Tysyn Hartman
On the interception to start the second half: Coach always says that the first five minutes of the second half is the most important, and I did not expect for it to happen that soon. [Stephen] Harrison did a great job with the breakup. and it just fell right into my hands.
