Series vs. North Texas
Tuesday’s contest marks the 35th meeting between Texas and North Texas. The Horns hold a 29-5 lead in the all-time series which dates back to the 1913-14 season. Texas has won seven straight games against UNT entering Tuesday’s contest. The last time the Mean Green defeated Texas came in a 75-74 win in Denton on Jan. 19, 1981. UT has posted a 23-1 all-time record at home against North Texas. The lone UNT victory in Austin during the series came in a 29-26 win on Dec. 6, 1930. In the last meeting between the two schools (Dec. 5, 2007), the Longhorns recorded an 88-72 victory in Austin.
Lone Star State Success
Since Rick Barnes arrived in Austin, the Longhorns have emerged as the dominant college basketball program in the state of Texas. The Horns have posted a 112-15 (.882) record against in-state foes during the Barnes era entering Tuesday’s contest, including marks of 26-4 against Baylor, 21-7 against Texas A&M and 25-3 against Texas Tech.
Sam Houston State Game Notes
Texas converted 16-of-26 (.615) free throws on the night, while Sam Houston went 0-of-2 from the line.
Jonathan Holmes (14 points) reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season. He set season highs in rebounds (nine), assists (three), blocks (three) and minutes (28).
Alexis Wangmene set a career high in scoring (13 points) and tied his season high in rebounds (eight). His eight boards were one shy of his career high. Wangmene also tied his career high in steals (two).
Sheldon McClellan (12 points) reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time this year. He also set a season high in rebounds (six).
J’Covan Brown (11 points) reached double figures in scoring for the fifth time this season and 38th time in his career (74 games). He also posted a season-high eight rebounds.
Horns at Home
Texas is in its 35th year of play in the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns have registered an all-time record of 410-95 (.812) in the building. Since Rick Barnes arrived in Austin, UT has recorded a 185-24 (.885) mark at the Erwin Center, including an 88-16 (.846) record in Big 12 Conference home games. Texas is 95-9 (.913) at the Erwin Center in the last seven seasons (dating to the start of the 2005-06 season).
Success from the Stripe
Texas has been solid from the free throw line through its first five contests. The Horns have converted 73.7% (101-of-137) of its free throw attempts this season. The highest FT percentage team at Texas in the Rick Barnes era came during the 2006-07 season (73.6%). The last time the Horns shot better than 75 percent from the stripe was during the 1977-78 season (76.0%).
Defense Wins
Solid defense has been a Texas trademark under coach Rick Barnes. This year, UT has allowed an average of 70.6 ppg on 40.1% FG shooting, including a 28-of-98 (.286) mark from three-point range. Texas also has limited its first five opponents to just 53 assists against 78 turnovers. UT held Sam Houston State to just 32.1% FG shooting (18-of-56), including a 4-of-18 (.222) mark from three-point range, during Saturday’s home win. Since Barnes arrived in Austin, the Horns have held 217 of their 450 opponents to under 40% FG shooting. Texas sports a 198-19 (.912) mark in the Barnes era when accomplishing the feat.
What Can Brown Do For You?
Junior guard J’Covan Brown has played in 74 career games (14 starts). A Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection, Brown is averaging a team-best 23.2 points and 5.4 rebounds while adding 32 assists against just nine turnovers through the first five contests. He has converted 46.4% (39-of-84) of his field goal attempts, including a 15-of-33 (.455) mark from three-point range, and 23-of-31 (.742) free throws.
Wangmene Provides Post Presence
Alexis Wangmene has played in 110 career games (five starts). He is tied for the team lead in blocks (seven) and ranks second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) while averaging 7.2 points in 27.6 minutes per game through the first five contests. In his last three contests entering Tuesday’s game, Wangmene has averaged 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest.

Wangmene’s Career Night
Alexis Wangmene had the most productive offensive night in his UT career during Saturday’s win against Sam Houston State. He posted a career-high 13 points (4-of-6 FG, 5-of-8 FT) and tied his season high with eight rebounds (one shy of his career high) in 27 minutes. Wagnmene also had 11 points (5-of-7 FG) and four rebounds in 29 minutes during the overtime loss to Oregon State (Nov. 19).
Chapman Showing Improvement
Clint Chapman has played in 88 career games (two starts). He is tied for the team lead in blocks (seven) and is averaging 5.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per contest through the first five games. Chapman tallied seven points and eight boards (one shy of career high) against Rhode Island (Nov. 15).
Holmes off to Fast Start
Jonathan Holmes ranks second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and leads the squad in rebounding (6.0 rpg) while converting 59.3% (16-of-27) from the floor and 92.6% (25-of-27) from the free throw line. In his last four contests, Holmes has averaged 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while hitting 13-of-22 (.591) field goals and 25-of-27 (.926) free throws. He had 16 points (4-of-8 FG, 7-of-7 FT) and eight boards in 20 minutes against North Carolina State (Nov. 21). Holmes had a team-high 14 points and set season highs in rebounds (nine), assists (three), blocks (three) and minutes (28) during Saturday’s win against Sam Houston State.
McClellan Provides Spark off the Bench
Sheldon McClellan ranks third on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) and has reached double figures in points in four of the first five contests. McClellan has averaged 12.5 points per game while hitting 17-of-32 (.531) field goals and 12-of-16 (.750) free throws in the last four contests. He had 16 points (5-of-11 FG, 5-of-7 FT) in 34 minutes against North Carolina State (Nov. 19).
