IRVING, Texas - University of Texas sophomore guard Myck Kabongo has been named to the five-man Preseason All-Big 12 Team, and sophomore guard Sheldon McClellan was selected as preseason honorable mention in a vote of the league's head coaches released on Thursday.
Kabongo, a 2011-12 All-Big 12 honorable mention selection, started all 34 games last season and ranked fourth in the league in assists per game (5.2). The Toronto native ranked second on the team in steals (38) and third in scoring (9.8 ppg). Among the Big 12's returning players, Kabongo has the third-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.73).
McClellan is Texas' top returning scorer after averaging 11.3 points per game as a freshman last season. The Houston native shot 45 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line while playing in all 34 games, including nine starts.
Baylor guard Pierre Jackson was voted Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, while Oklahoma junior-college transfer Amath M'Baye was named the Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart was tabbed as the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
The Longhorns open the 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 9 against Fresno State. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised live on Longhorn Network.
