Men's Basketball accepts bid to play in College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2013 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) presented by Buick, the school announced Sunday evening. The Longhorns (16-17 overall, 7-11 Big 12 Conference) will travel to face Houston (19-12 overall, 7-9 Conference USA) in an Opening Round contest on Wednesday, March 20. Tip time has been set for 8 p.m. (Central) at Hofheinz Pavilion, and the contest will be televised by AXS TV. The sixth annual CBI will consist of 16 teams vying for the tournament championship. Opening Round games will be played on Tuesday, March 19 and Wednesday, March 20. The Quarterfinal Round is scheduled for Monday, March 25, and Semifinal Round games will be played on Wednesday, March 27. A unique feature of the CBI is its best-of-three Championship Series, which begins on Monday, April 1 and continues on Wednesday, April 3. Should a third game be necessary, it will be played on Friday, April 5. Every game of the 2013 CBI will be played on campus. Past champions of the CBI include: Pittsburgh (2012), Oregon (2011), VCU (2010), Oregon State (2009) and Tulsa (2008). This marks UT's first appearance in the College Basketball Invitational. In fact, it marks the Longhorns' first postseason appearance in a non-NCAA Tournament since the 1985-86 season, when Texas advanced to the Postseason NIT Second Round. The Longhorns will make their 35th all-time postseason appearance in the 2013 CBI. UT has registered an all-time record of 40-36 (.526) in postseason play in its previous 34 appearances. The Horns have made a total of 30 appearances in the NCAA Tournament (34-33 record) and four trips to the Postseason NIT (6-3). Texas has won one championship in program history, capturing the 1978 Postseason NIT title. UT had advanced to 14 consecutive NCAA Tournaments entering the 2012-13 season (1999-2012), tied for the fourth-longest active NCAA streak nationally. Texas was one of just six schools to achieve the feat, joining Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
