University of Texas to retire Kevin Durant's No. 35 jersey during Texas Tech game
Feb. 17, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas will retire the No. 35 jersey of Kevin Durant in a halftime ceremony during the home game against Texas Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Frank Erwin Center. The 2007 consensus National Player of the Year, Durant will become just the third player in the 103-year history of the program to have his jersey retired.
T.J. Ford, the 2003 National Player of the Year, had his No. 11 retired on Feb. 8, 2004. Slater Martin, a two-time All-American at Texas and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, had his No. 15 retired on Jan. 31, 2009.
Durant (born Sept. 29, 1988) led the 2006-07 Longhorns, one of the youngest teams in the nation (started four freshmen and one sophomore for the majority of the season), to a 25-10 mark and the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. He earned consensus National Player of the Year honors, becoming the first freshman in NCAA history to win any of the major National Player of the Year awards. A consensus first-team All-American, Durant was just the third freshman in NCAA history to earn that accolade (joining Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma in 1983 and Chris Jackson of LSU in 1989).
Durant earned Big 12 Conference Player of the Year honors, becoming the first freshman to receive that award. He was the only player during the 2006-07 season to rank in the Top 10 nationally in both scoring (fourth) and rebounding (fourth). Durant led the Big 12 in scoring (25.8 ppg), rebounding (11.1 rpg) and blocked shots (67), and his 20 double-doubles ranked second nationally. He reached the 30-point mark 11 times during the season, the 20-point plateau in 30 games and posted double digits in points in all 35 contests.
Durant turned professional following his freshman season and was selected by the Seattle Sonics (now relocated as the Oklahoma City Thunder) as the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He earned the NBA T-Mobile Rookie of the Year award with the Sonics in 2007-08.
The Texas-Texas Tech game on Feb. 25 is slated for an 8:30 pm. Central tip at the Erwin Center. Fans interested in witnessing this historic event can still purchase tickets by calling the UT Athletics ticket office at 512-471-3333 or logging on to TexasBoxOffice.com.
