Augustin named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas freshman point guard D.J. Augustin has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks the third time this season that Augustin has received the award, as he earned the same accolade on Dec. 11 and Jan. 22. During UT's two games this past week, Augustin averaged 27.0 points and 5.5 assists per game while converting 14-of-24 (.583) field goals, including 4-of-8 threes, and 22-of-23 (.956) free throws. In Monday's loss at No. 6 Texas A&M, Augustin tallied 23 points to go along with five assists. He returned to record a career-high 31 points (9-of-13 FG, 10-of-10 FT) and six assists during Saturday's home win against Iowa State. For the year, Augustin leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally (through games of Feb. 8) in assists at 6.8 apg. He ranks third on the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) and has posted 162 assists against 76 turnovers (2.13-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio) on the season. In Big 12 games, Augustin has recorded 75 assists against just 27 turnovers (2.78-to-1 ratio). A Texas player has now won Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors in eight of the 14 weeks so far this season. Kevin Durant has claimed the accolade five times, while Augustin has earned the honor three times. Texas (17-7, 7-3 Big 12) returns to action when it hosts No. 17 Oklahoma State later tonight. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
