Series vs. Baylor
Texas has faced Baylor more times (236 entering Saturday) than any other opponent. In fact, UT’s opening four games in the school’s first year of basketball (1906) came against the Bears (Texas won all four). The only time Texas and Baylor did not meet since 1906 was in 1908, when the Longhorns did not field a team. The Horns have won 51 of the last 62 meetings between the two schools dating back to the 1982-83 season.
Success Against Baylor in Waco
Texas holds a 64-46 advantage all-time against Baylor in games played in Waco entering Saturday’s contest. The Horns are 12-1 against the Bears in Waco during the Rick Barnes era. Seven of the 12 wins have come by double-digit margins.
Lone Star State Success
Since Rick Barnes arrived in Austin, the Longhorns have emerged as the dominant college basketball program in the state of Texas. The Horns have posted a 117-15 (.886) record against in-state foes during the Barnes era entering Saturday’s contest, including marks of 26-4 against Baylor, 22-7 against Texas A&M and 25-3 against Texas Tech.
Iowa State Game Notes
Texas improved to 9-1 against Iowa State in games played in Austin.
The Horns improved to 12-1 in home games this year.
UT held the Cyclones to team season lows in points (55) and FG percentage (.333, 20-of-60). Texas improved to 10-0 this year when holding its opponent below 40% FG shooting.
Texas posted a +7 (41-34) rebound margin. The Horns have outrebounded 14 of their first 20 opponents this season.
Myck Kabongo (13 points) reached double figures in scoring for the 11th time this year and fourth time in Big 12 play.
Julien Lewis (12 points) reached double figures in scoring for the eighth time this year and second time in Big 12 play. Lewis set a career high in rebounds (seven).
J’Covan Brown (12 points) reached double figures in scoring for the 18th time this year and 51st time in his career (89 games).
Clint Chapman (three blocks) recorded at least three blocked shots for the fifth time this season.
Improvement on the Boards
The Longhorns have been a much improved rebounding team over the last 13 contests (8-5 record). Texas has recorded a +6.8 rebound margin (38.8-31.9) during the stretch.
Defense Wins
Solid defense has been a trademark of the Texas program under Rick Barnes. This year, UT has allowed an average of 64.9 ppg on 39.2% FG shooting. Texas also has limited its first 20 opponents to 211 assists against 277 turnovers. Since Barnes arrived in Austin, the Horns have held 225 of their 465 opponents to under 40% FG shooting. Texas sports a 206-19 (.916) mark in the Barnes era when accomplishing the feat (10-0 this year).
Success from the Stripe
Texas has been solid from the free throw line through its first 20 contests. The Horns have converted 72.7% (352-of-484) of their free throw attempts this season. The highest FT percentage team at Texas in the Rick Barnes era came during the 2006-07 season (73.6%). The last time the Horns shot better than 75 percent from the stripe was during the 1977-78 season (76.0%).
What Can Brown Do For You?
Junior guard J’Covan Brown has played in 89 career games (29 starts). A Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection, Brown leads the team in scoring (19.1 ppg), steals (26) and minutes (34.0 mpg) and ranks second in assists (4.0 apg). He has converted 41.0% (129-of-315) of his field goal attempts, including a 48-of-128 (.375) mark from three-point range. Brown has recorded 30-plus points twice this year, topped the 20-point mark 10 times and reached double figures in scoring in 18 of the first 20 games.
Brown’s Success at the Stripe
J’Covan Brown has established himself as one of the top free throw shooters in UT history.
Brown currently ranks third on the school’s all-time career FT percentage list, as he has converted 264-of-305 (.866) from the stripe in his career.
He has hit 76-of-89 (.854) free throws this season, including 36-of-38 (.947) in Big 12 Conference play.
Brown had his streak of 28 consecutive free throws made (tied for second longest in UT history) snapped on his first attempt in Tuesday’s game against Iowa State.
In his last eight games, Brown has converted 42-of-44 (.955) free throws.
Chapman Showing Improvement
Clint Chapman has played in 103 career games (nine starts). He leads the team in rebounding (5.8 rpg) and blocks (35) while averaging 6.9 points in 21.8 minutes per contest this season.
Through the first seven Big 12 games, Chapman has averaged 10.4 points (second on team), a team-best 6.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 28.3 minutes per contest. He has converted 25-of-45 (.556) field goals and 23-of-28 (.821) free throws.
Kabongo Takes the Point
Myck Kabongo leads the team in assists (5.5 apg), ranks second in steals (24) and is third in scoring (9.8 ppg) this season. He has recorded at least five assists in 11 of the first 20 games this year. He posted a team-high 13 points (6-of-9 FG) in 37 minutes against Iowa State (Jan. 24).
Holmes off to Solid Start
Jonathan Holmes ranks fifth on the team in scoring (8.0 ppg), second in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and third in blocked shots (14) while converting 52.6% (51-of-97) from the floor and 78.1% (50-of-64) from the free throw line. He has reached double figures in scoring in eight of the first 20 games.
Lewis Finding His Role
Julien Lewis ranks in a tie for third on the team in steals (20) and fourth in scoring (8.1 ppg) this year. He has reached double figures in points in eight of his first 19 games. Lewis tallied 12 points (4-of-9 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and a career-high seven rebounds in 29 minutes against Iowa State (Jan. 24).
