The Longhorns have posted a 12-1 mark in Big 12 Conference openers in the Rick Barnes era. Texas is 13-2 in league openers since the Big 12 began play in 1996-97.

Series vs. Iowa State
Wednesday’s contest marks the 22nd meeting between Texas and Iowa State. UT owns a 13-8 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to the 1966-67 season. In that first meeting, the Cyclones posted a 101-87 win in Phoenix on Dec. 21, 1966. Texas has won seven straight and is 11-3 against the Cyclones during the Rick Barnes era entering Wednesday’s game. The Cyclones hold a 5-4 advantage in games played in Ames during the series, but UT has won in each of its last three trips to Iowa State.
Rice Game Notes
Texas improved to 9-0 at home this year. All nine wins have been by double-digit margins.
UT improved to 116-15 (.885) against in-state opponents during the Rick Barnes era.
Texas held Rice to 30.8% FG shooting (16-of-52). The Horns improved to 8-0 this year when holding their opponent below 40% FG shooting.
UT posted a +10 rebound margin (37-27). The Horns improved to 7-2 this year when outrebounding their opponent.
J’Covan Brown (23 points) topped the 20-point mark for the seventh time this year and 15th time in his career (82 games). He reached double figures in scoring for the 12th time this season and 45th time in his career.
Sheldon McClellan (19 points) reached double figures in scoring for the ninth time this year. He set his career high in free throws made (8-of-9) and tied his career high in steals (three). McClellan made his first collegiate start.
Myck Kabongo set career highs in rebounds (nine) and minutes (36).
Sterling Gibbs tied his career high in three-point field goals made (3-of-3).
Clint Chapman made his first start since his sophomore season (Nov. 14, 2008 vs. Stetson) and his third career start.

Consistent Success in the Big 12
Texas has now reached the 10-win mark in Big 12 Conference play a total of 10 times in the 13 seasons under Rick Barnes. Texas posted 9-7 conference marks in 2004-05, 2008-09 and 2009-10. The Horns have recorded at least nine league wins in each of Barnes’ 13 seasons in Austin. UT has recorded at least 13 conference victories in six of Barnes’ 13 seasons in Austin (13-3 in 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2002-03, 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2010-11).
13 Wins in Big 12 Play ... Again
Texas tied its school record for Big 12 wins in a year (13) during the 2010-11 season. The Horns have reached the 13-win mark a total of six times since the inception of the league in 1996-97 (1998-99, 1999-2000, 2002-03, 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2010-11).
Improvement on the Boards
The Longhorns have been a much improved rebounding team over the last six contests. Texas has recorded a +10.3 rebound margin (42.0-31.7) during the stretch.
The Horns registered a +24 rebound margin (52-28) against Nicholls State (Dec. 13), including a 24-9 edge on the offensive glass.
Texas posted a +25 rebound margin (48-23) against Temple (Dec. 17), including a 17-3 edge on the offensive glass.
The Horns registered a +10 rebound margin (37-27) against Rice (Dec. 31).
Better Defense of Late
After struggling on the defensive end during their two games in New Jersey, the Horns have been a better defensive unit in their last nine contests. Texas has held its last nine opponents to an average of 57.3 points per game on a combined 34.3% FG shooting (175-of-510).
What Can Brown Do For You?
Junior guard J’Covan Brown has played in 82 career games (22 starts). A Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection, Brown is averaging a team-best 19.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while adding 54 assists (4.2 apg) against 32 turnovers through the first 13 contests. He has converted 44.6% (90-of-202) of his field goal attempts, including a 31-of-85 (.365) mark from three-point range. Brown has topped the 20-point mark seven times this year and reached double figures in scoring in 12 of the first 13 games.
Chapman Showing Improvement
Clint Chapman has played in 96 career games (three starts). He leads the team in blocks (24) and is second on the squad in rebounding (5.3 rpg) while averaging 5.0 points in 18.3 minutes per contest through the first 13 games. Over the last five games, Chapman has averaged a team-best 7.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 20.4 minutes per contest.
Kabongo Takes the Point
Myck Kabongo leads the team in assists (5.5 apg) and steals (18) and ranks third on the squad in scoring (9.9 ppg) this season. He has recorded at least seven assists in seven of the first 13 games this year. In the last eight contests, Myck Kabongo has averaged 10.9 points, 5.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game while hitting 25-of-49 (.510) field goals and 31-of-45 (.689) free throws. Kabongo has a 45-to-24 assist-to-turnover ratio during this stretch.
McClellan Provides Spark
Sheldon McClellan ranks second on the team in scoring (12.4 ppg) while converting 51.4% (54-of-105) field goals, including 16-of-44 (.364) from three-point range. He has reached double figures in points in nine of the first 13 contests.
Holmes off to Solid Start
Jonathan Holmes ranks fourth on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg), leads the team in rebounding (5.7 rpg) and ranks third in blocked shots (10) while converting 50.7% (36-of-71) from the floor and 80.4% (45-of-56) from the free throw line. He has reached double figures in scoring in six of the first 13 games.
Bond on a Roll
Jaylen Bond has averaged 10.0 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per contest while hitting 19-of-29 (.655) field goals over the last four contests. He earned his first collegiate start against Rice (Dec. 31). On the season, Bond ranks in a tie for third on the team in rebounding (4.8 rpg) while averaging 5.2 points in 16.2 minutes per contest.
