Men's Basketball downed by Red Raiders in Lubbock
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Jarrius Jackson scored 22 points to lead Texas Tech to a 69-65 victory over Texas on Tuesday night in the Red Raiders' first conference win over the Longhorns since Bob Knight arrived in 2001.
Knight raised a clenched fist in response to cheers from remaining fans as he left the court as the arena cleared out.
Jackson hit his fourth 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining in the game to give Tech a 65-59 lead but Daniel Gibson answered with one for Texas to give the Longhorns a chance with less than a minute remaining.
Down 65-62, Texas tried to press Tech guard Ronald Ross as he dribbled up the floor. But all alone under the basket stood Darryl Dora, who dunked the ball to put Tech up 67-62 with 48 seconds remaining.
The only time Tech (17-7, 9-4 Big 12) has beaten Texas since Knight's arrival was in March 2003 at the Big 12 tournament. The win Tuesday night put Tech in a tie for third place in the conference with Oklahoma, which plays at Tech on March 5.
It was also the first loss in Lubbock for Rick Barnes, who is in his seventh year coaching Texas (18-8, 7-6). It ended a three-game win streak for the Longhorns.
Tech had four players in double figures. Ross scored 16 points, Dora had 13 and Martin Zeno added 10 for the Red Raiders.
Tech trailed most of the way but went ahead 38-37 for the first time in the game after a 6-0 run with 16:12 remaining. There were three ties and 12 lead changes after that.
Daniel Gibson scored 22 points, while Brad Buckman added 16 and 13 rebounds. It was the fifth game in six that Buckman got a double-double.
The last time the teams played when neither was ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 poll was in January 2002.
Both teams had droughts in the first half. Texas' came after Daniel Gibson's 3-pointer that put the Longhorns up 28-17. Texas then had eight possessions with no points. Tech's came earlier, allowing Texas to score 10 unanswered points. Ronald Ross ended the half on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Texas' lead to 33-30.
