Baseball inks transfer for 2010 season
Nov. 19, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns inked a right-handed pitcher to join the squad for the 2010 season, head coach Augie Garrido announced on Wednesday. Jacob Cowan, a former pitcher at the University of Virginia, will join the Longhorns after he pitches for San Jacinto College in 2009. "Jake Cowan is someone that Coach (Skip) Johnson thinks should be able to come in and compete for a weekend spot next year," UT associate head coach Tommy Harmon said. "He pitches between 88-92 miles-per-hour and commands his breaking ball and changeup with the ability to throw all his pitches for strikes." The Roswell, Ga., native posted a 2-1 record with a 3.34 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 32.1 innings as a freshman at Virginia in 2008. He pitched four games as a mid-week starter, earning wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Longwood. Cowan was 9-2 with 98 strikeouts in 76 innings as a senior at Roswell High School to earn team MVP and all-state honors. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He logged a 6-2 record as a junior and a 5-1 mark as a senior. After high school, Cowan was ranked the 60th best prospect in the country by Perfect Game and was named first-team All-Southeast and second-team All-American by Perfect Game in 2007. Cowan joins seven high school standouts the Longhorns inked last Wednesday on the first day of early signing. Jacob Cowan - RHP - Roswell, Ga. (San Jacinto College)
