Catching up with former Longhorns in professional baseball
With a handful of Longhorns having recently made their professional debut, TexasSports.com looks to catch readers up on what the former UT standouts are doing in both the minor and major leagues. As of July 17, former Longhorns, Adrian Alaniz, Chais Fuller, Brett Lewis, Joseph Krebs and Chance Wheeless have been able to get their first minor league games under their belts. Alaniz, playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters (Washington Nationals - Rookie Class A) has started a stellar rookie season posting a 3-0 record with a 0.46 ERA in five games, including two starts. Fuller was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and is playing in the Gulf Coast League for rookies. In 14 games for the GCL Braves, Fuller is batting .159 with one RBI. Lewis is making his way up the minor league ranks with a recent promotion from the Class A Lowell Spinners to the Eastern League's Portland Seadogs (July 13), a Class AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. While playing for the Spinners, Lewis batted .208 with two RBI. Krebs has appeared in six games with the Billings Mustangs, a rookie affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, posting 4.22 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Wheeless is hitting .239 with two home runs and seven RBI in 20 games with the Missoula Osprey (Class A - Arizona Diamondbacks) of the Pioneer League. Roger Clemens headlines the list of Horns playing on the Major League level. This season for the Yankees, Clemens is 2-4 with 3.88 ERA. Brandon Fahey was called up to the Baltimore Orioles to play shortstop from the Class AAA Norfolk Tides, and he is hitting .182 with one RBI in 33 at-bats for the Orioles. Omar Quintanilla has played in 15 games for the Colorado Rockies as a second baseman, hitting .256 with 11 hits and two RBI. Pitcher J.P. Howell of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays has a 1-3 record and 35 strikeouts in seven games. Curtis Thigpen had a brief stint with the Blue Jays and is back playing catcher for the Syracuse Chiefs (Toronto Blue Jays - Class AAA). Thigpen is batting .295, with three home runs, and 17 RBI for the Chiefs. Stephen Randolph is having a successful season for the Round Rock Express (Houston Astros - Class AAA) and is hoping to make it back up with the Houston Astros after two appearances with the team. Randolph is 7-2 for the Express and holds a 2.38 ERA. He also has 64 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of play. Ryan Hubele was called up to the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles - Class AAA) from the Bowie Baysox and is batting .571 with two RBI in two games. Dustin Majewski and Kyle Yates are playing for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays - Class AA). Yates is 5-5 with a 4.67 ERA and leads the team in innings pitched (90.2) and in strikeouts (63). Majewski has 22 doubles, 36 RBI, and seven home runs as an outfielder. Sam LeCure is 4-2 with a 4.47 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 12 starts for the Chattanooga Lookouts (Cincinnati Reds - Class AA). The Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles - Class AA) are left with one former Horn on the team after Hubele's departure. Pitcher Beau Hale owns a 6-4 record with a 4.52 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 14 games. The California League is still home of many former Longhorns including, Seth Johnston, David Maroul and Taylor Teagarden. Johnston is batting .308, with 12 doubles, three triples and five home runs for the Lake Elsinore Storm (San Diego Padres - Class A Advanced). Maroul has 15 home runs to go with a .239 batting average 23 doubles and 42 RBI for the San Jose Giants (San Francisco Giants - Class A Advanced). Teagarden is batting .313, with 67 runs, 23 doubles, 15 home runs and 54 RBI as a designated hitter for the Bakersfield Blaze (Texas Rangers - Class A Advanced). Shortstop Robby Hudson and pitcher Kyle McCulloch are playing for the Winston-Salem Warthogs (Chicago White Sox - Class A Advanced). Hudson is batting .289, with 5 doubles, 11 RBI, eight stolen bases and one home run. McCulloch is 7-6 with a 3.61 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 18 games. On June 24, he was selected the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Outfielder Drew Stubbs is hitting .250 with 14 doubles, seven home runs, and 25 RBI for the Daytona Dragons (Cincinnati Reds - Class A). He leads the team with 19 stolen bases and 60 runs. Former Longhorns J.D. Reininger and Gerrit Simpson are playing in independent leagues. Reininger is playing for the Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association and in 53 games has posted 44 hits, 12 doubles, 4 home runs, and 29 RBI. Simpson is pitching for the Fargo-Moorhead Red Hawks of the Northern League and owns a 4.66 ERA with 41 strikeouts. Five Longhorn pitchers are currently on the disabled list, including J. Brent Cox (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees - New York Yankees - Class AAA), Danny Muegge (Jacksonville Suns - Los Angeles Dodgers - Class AA), Matt Goodson (Lancaster Jethawks - Boston Red Sox - Class A Advanced), Brad Halsey (Sacramento River Cats - Oakland Athletics - Class AAA) and Huston Street of the Oakland Athletics.
