Former Longhorn Thigpen makes Major League Baseball debut

TORONTO -- Curtis Thigpen recently became the 94th former Longhorn to play in Major League Baseball. Thigpen, who was called up by the Toronto Blue Jays to help fill in for injured first baseman Lyle Overbay, made his first big-league start last Wednesday. In his first career at-bat, the 24-year old laced a hit off Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir.

Thigpen, who split time as a catcher and first baseman at UT and is Toronto's top prospect behind the plate, was hitting .299 with nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI in 44 games at Class AAA Syracuse prior to being called up.

Since arriving in Toronto, Thigpen has appeared in four games, including one start. He has two hits in five at-bats and scored his first career run on Sunday.

Thigpen was a three-year letterwinner at Texas. As a senior, he hit .378 with 28 doubles, seven home runs and 51 RBI in 72 games. He played in 36 games as a freshman during the Longhorns' national championship run in 2002.
