Suttle earns Academic All-America status
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore third baseman Bradley Suttle was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday. Suttle, a first-team All-Big 12 selection, is hitting .348 on the season with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 62 RBI. He ranks second on the squad in batting average, home runs and RBI. In the classroom, Suttle owns a 3.54 grade point average as a business major. He was named to the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll last season and was recently tabbed a First-Team Academic All-Big 12 performer. Suttle was one of three Big 12 Conference players to make the list, joining Oklahoma's Aaron Ivey (first-team outfielder) and Kansas State¹s Brett Scott (third-team infielder). Texas has had an Academic All-America in each of the last three seasons with Suttle following former Longhorn Drew Stubbs earning the accolades in 2005 and 2006. Suttle is the ninth Texas player to earn Academic All-America recognition from CoSIDA, joining Lou Bagwell (1970), Jim Gideon (1974-75), Doug Duncan (1975-76), Kevin Shannon (1979), Ricky Dixon (1980), Mike Patrick (1988), MacGregor Byers (1996) and Drew Stubbs (2005-06). To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and/or graduate work. He must have also reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at that institution. Position players must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at their listed position, while pitchers must have at least 10.0 innings pitched to their credit. The final team is then selected by a vote of members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee. Texas owns a 44-15 overall record, and begins NCAA Championship regional action Friday, June 1 with a 7 p.m. game vs. Brown at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas.
