Maroul named Big 12 Player of the Week and Stubbs invited to USA Baseball Trials

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas senior David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week and Longhorns sophomore Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) was one of 13 players nationally to be invited to the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials on Tuesday, May 3. While Maroul's weekly accolade is the first of his career and the sixth received by UT players this season, Stubbs' invitation is the second in as many years for the sophomore outfielder, who played for Team USA one summer ago along with Texas teammates J. Brent Cox and Taylor Teagarden.

Starting all three games of the Longhorns series with No. 14 Missouri last weekend (April 29-May 1) at the hot corner, Maroul not only helped the Horns to their sixth consecutive league series victory (2-1) by making numerous outstanding defensive plays, but he also batted a team-best .500 (5-for-10) against the Tigers while driving in one run. He also amassed a .600 slugging mark to go along with a .545 on-base mark last week as he posted the first three-hit game of his career during Texas' game with Mizzou on April 30.

Stubbs, meanwhile, is currently batting .316 overall while pacing the Horns in runs scored (45), home runs (10), stolen bases (20) and multi-RBI outings (11). The 2005 Preseason All-American also ranks among the top 10 in the Big 12 Conference in terms of runs, hits (61), home runs, doubles (13), steals and total bases (108).

While the USA Baseball National Team Trials will be held from June 27-30 in Raleigh, N.C., the 20-man national team roster, which will be announced on July 1, will be chosen from a pool of 36 players, of which an additional 23 have yet to be determined.
