Corey Knebel named to Golden Spikes Award Watch List
Feb. 14, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Baseball junior pitcher Corey Knebel (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) was named to the 2013 Golden Spikes Award Watch List, as announced today by USA Baseball. The list marks the organization's first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2013 for the 36th time. The Watch List features 50 of the nation's top amateur players, and it will be a "rolling" list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award. The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live on MLB Network for the third year in a row, with a live presentation scheduled during The Rundown on Friday, July 19. Through USA Baseball's partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), the presentation will also be simulcast with a live stream available from GoldenSpikesAward.com and USABaseball.com. A total of 11 Texas Baseball players have been named finalists for the award. Knebel earned 2013 Baseball America Preseason All-America second team honors and was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch List (given to the nation's top closer). With 28 career saves, Knebel needs 13 this season to tie the UT career mark of 41 saves (held by Huston Street, 2002-04). He tied the school single-season record for saves (19) in his 2011 freshman season as he was named NCBWA and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman Pitcher of the Year as well as NCBWA Stopper of the Year.
