WACO, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns opened its fall slate outscoring the Baylor Bears 9-4 in a pre-scheduled 14-inning baseball scrimmage at Baylor Ballpark. Both teams got to play plenty of players with 24 Longhorns, including seven pitchers, and 25 Bears, including six pitchers, seeing action in the exhibition in which both teams batted 10 players.
Texas was led at the plate by newcomer Brandon Loy who came off the bench to bat 2-for-3 with two RBI. Brandon Belt went 1-for-3 with four walks, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Longhorns pitchers shined on the day, fanning 21 and allowing just two walks and 11 hits. After Chance Ruffin allowed three runs, including two earned in the first three innings, UT hurlers buckled down and allowed just one run in the final 11 innings.
Taylor Jungmann pitched innings four through six and allowed just two hits while striking out six over his three frames. Keith Shinaberry followed with one hitless inning. After Brandon Workman allowed one run in three innings, Sam Stafford and Stayton Thomas pitched back-to-back scoreless innings and Austin Wood closed out the deal, striking out three in two shutout innings.
Baylor led 4-2 after the first nine innings, but the Horns struck four three runs in the 11th, two in the 12th and two in the 13th.
The Longhorns got doubles from Jordan Etier, Belt, Kevin Keyes and Kyle Lusson.
Texas also played solid defense on the day, committing just one error in 14 innings, while Baylor had six miscues.
Texas returns to fall action next Sunday when the Longhorns host the Rice Owls in a 2 p.m. contest at The Dell Diamond.
