AUSTIN, Texas – Three relievers pitched five innings of scoreless relief and the No. 25 Texas Longhorns benefitted from a pair of bases loaded hits to beat the Prairie View A&M Panthers 5-2 in non-conference baseball action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday evening.
Austin Dicharry (1-1) pitched 1.1 shutout innings to earn his first victory since May 30, 2009. Dicharry pitched the final 5.2 innings in Texas’ 25-inning NCAA Regional triumph against Boston College when he notched his last win. The northpaw allowed one hit while fanning two.
John Curtiss followed Dicharry with 1.2 blank frames, surrendering one hit while striking out one. Hoby Milner earned his third save of the season, allowing one hit while striking out two in 2.0 innings.
Ricky Jacquez worked 4.0 innings in the start for Texas. He yielded two runs on three hits while striking out two.
Texas (26-16) broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Mark Payton reached on a bunt single and Brooks Marlow drew a walk to put a pair on. Erich Weiss laced a single off the glove of a diving Panthers’ second baseman and Payton came around to score for the 1-0 lead.
Prairie View A&M (22-21) claimed its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning. James Fontenot started the inning with a wall-banger to the gap in left centerfield for a double. Brett Valley bunted back to the pitcher for a single, but Fontenot was unable to advance to third. Brad Benes sacrificed both runners into scoring position with a bunt. Dominiq Harris singled back up the middle to drive in both runners for the 2-1 lead.
The Longhorns bounced back for a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Tim Maitland was hit by a pitch and Payton singled to rightfield to put runners on the corners. Marlow was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Weiss singled to the gap in right centerfield, plating Maitland for the equalizer and Jonathan Walsh gave Texas a 4-2 lead with a single to rightfield. Texas started the season going 6-for-36 with bases loaded, but have gone 8-for-12 in their opportunities since April 14, including 2-for-3 in the fifth inning.
Texas tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Jordan Etier singled through the right side of the infield and scored when Kevin Lusson rattled a pinch-hit double down the rightfield line to inflate the Longhorns’ cushion to 5-2.
Payton paced all hitters at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and one stolen base. Weiss went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Walsh added a pair of RBI.
Harris went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Prairie View A&M’s offense.
Sean Hollis (1-5) was saddled with the loss for the Panthers. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over 5.0 innings. Steve Lunsford worked the final 3.0 innings, allowing on e run on three hits while striking out three.
Texas returns to action Friday with a three-game series in Columbia against the Missouri Tigers.
