AUSTIN, Texas – John Curtiss, Hoby Milner and Corey Knebel combined to hold the Texas State Bobcats hitless over the last six innings as the No. 23 Texas Longhorns registered a 2-0 win at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday evening.
Five Longhorns pitchers combined to hold the Bobcats to four hits as Texas toppled Texas State for the 16th consecutive time in the series.
Curtiss (1-2) worked 3.0 shutout innings to earn the victory. He entered the game to start the fourth inning and scattered two walks while fanning one. Hoby Milner fanned three of the six batters he faced in 2.0 innings of work. Knebel earned his seventh save of the season allowing one walk and striking out one in the ninth inning.
Dillon Peters pitched 2.0 shutout innings in the start. He allowed one hit in 2.0 innings. Austin Dicharry worked the third inning and allowed three of Texas State’s four hits. Jacob Felts erased two of the three runners in the inning picking off Garrett Mattlage, who led off the inning with a single, at first base and throwing out Tyler Sibley, who followed with a single, trying to steal second base. After Colby Targun singled to give the Bobcats three consecutive singles, Dicharry induced a flyout by Jeff McVaney to leave the frame unscathed.
After Mark Payton led off the bottom of the first with a walk, Texas State recorded 14 consecutive outs. Kevin Lusson broke the string with a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth and Jacob Felts followed with Texas’ first hit of the game to put two runners on, but Jordan Etier grounded out to end the inning.
Texas (21-13) broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brooks Marlow hit a leadoff double down the rightfield line and scored when Payton followed with a single down the rightfield line for the 1-0 lead. Taylor Stell followed with a single through the left side of the infield and looked like the Longhorns would do some more damage in the inning, but Erich Weiss bounced into a double play and Jonathan Walsh grounded out to first to end the frame.
The Longhorns tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Alex Silver hit a leadoff double down the leftfield line, moved to third on a groundout by Lusson and scored when Felts hit a double of his own down the leftfield line staking Texas to a 2-0 lead.
Taylor Black (2-1) was the tough-luck loser for the Bobcats. He yielded two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings. Ross Goebel retired both batters he faced in 0.2 innings including a strikeout. Louis Head scattered one hit and one walk while fanning two in 1.0 scoreless innings.
