AUSTIN, Texas -- Three Texas Longhorns pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout and Kevin Keyes hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for a 6-0 win over the Stanford Cardinal in collegiate baseball action Friday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Longhorns' starter Taylor Jungmann (2-0) battled through early control problems to keep Stanford scoreless through 7.0 innings. The sophomore scattered four hits and a career-high four walks while striking out 10. Stayton Thomas worked 0.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out one. Andrew McKirahan closed out the game by retiring all four batters he faced, including one strikeout.

Texas (3-2) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the third inning with a little bit of small ball.  Jordan Etier started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tant Shepherd. With one out, Cameron Rupp drove a line drive to the gap in right centerfield for a double, pushing Etier across for the 1-0 lead.

The Longhorns inflated the cushion to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Shepherd singled up the middle to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Loy. Cameron Rupp was hit by a pitch and Russell Moldenhauer drew a walk to load the bases. On a 1-0 offering, Kevin Keyes blasted a grand slam that sailed over the right centerfield wall bringing the Texas lead to five runs

Texas pegged its last run of the night in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Etier singled to shallow right and Shepherd singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. Loy bounced into an RBI fielder's choice to push Etier across for the insurance run.

Keyes led the Texas offensive firepower going 1-for-4 with a grand slam. Etier went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Rupp went 1-for-2 with one run scored, one RBI, and one walk.

Jordan Pries (1-1) was saddled with the loss for Stanford (4-1). He allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. Zach Jones had two hits to lead the Cardinal offense.

Texas and Stanford return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

TEXAS QUOTES
Coach Augie Garrido
On Taylor Jungmann:
Jungmann took charge of the game from the mound and was brilliant. I think he also showed his maturity in who he decided to pitch to and who he decided not to. He picked out the left handed hitters that were coming up to bat in the innings when they were threatening, and he pitched around them to get to the right handed hitter where he felt more comfortable. He got the final out of the inning with that kind of approach.

On the team: I thought the defense played well, they made all of the plays that needed to be made. I don't think we gave away a base today. On the offensive side of it, Cameron Rupp opened it up with a two out base hit to get the run on the board. Keyes's ball that went out of the ballpark with the bases loaded relaxed everybody, and was, no pun intended, the key to it.

Jordan Etier
On his personal performance offensively:
The coach and I have been working, and changing the little things, and I feel a lot better at the plate.

On the wind: It didn't really affect me when I was throwing to first, but it affected Kevin a little. He was swinging great though. The outfield did a great job today. Coach Garrido talked a lot about the outfield and how the wind was going to be a factor, so we were pretty prepared.

Taylor Jungmann
On his pitching technique:
I just try to get in a rhythm when I'm pitching. It's all about the rhythm and timing. Skip talks about it all the time.

On the moral of the team: It started yesterday in practice, we were really loose. I think it helped in the game today, because we were really loose and that's where we want to be.

Kevin Keyes
On his home run:
Home runs always make your team loose. I feel like our team's offense is moving in the right direction right now. We had a good plan. Hopefully it continues this weekend.

On Taylor Jungmann: We don't really worry about Taylor. He's one of the best out there. We all felt that he was going to get the job done, and he did great.
