Texas earns the No. 6 seed nationally in NCAA Tournament
Led by Big 12 Player of the Year Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia), First-team All-Big 12 Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas) and Big 12 Coach of the Year Jerritt Elliott, Texas earned its 21st NCAA Tournament bid, the fourth-most in NCAA history. The Longhorns were last selected for the NCAA Tournament in 2002, when the team advanced to the second round, falling to Arizona in five games in Tucson, Ariz. Texas State (27-5) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of its victory at the Southland Tournament. Michigan (19-12), out of the Big Ten, earned one of the 31 at-large bids to the Tournament. The Wolverines were 9-11 in conference action, finishing sixth in the league. Rice (25-4) is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, also earning one of the at-large bids to the championships. The Owls finished second in the Western Athletic Conference behind Hawaii. This is the first time the Longhorns will host first- and second-rounds since 1999 and the 17th time overall the team is hosting first- and/or second-round matches. Texas has never fallen in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, earning a perfect 20-0 record in opening-round matches. Big 12 Champion Nebraska is the tournament's top seed, followed by Penn State, Hawaii and Minnesota. Ohio State is the No. 5 seed, while UT, Washington and two-time defending national champion USC round out the top eight seeds. 2004 NCAA Tournament - Austin Sub-Regional Friday, Dec. 3 5 p.m. - Match 1: Rice vs. Michigan 7 p.m. - Match 2: Texas vs. Texas State Saturday, Dec. 4 6:30 p.m. - Winner of Match 1 vs. Winner of Match 2 |
