DALLAS - University of Texas sophomore outside hitter Dariam Acevedo (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) was one of 52 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, the conference announced Tuesday.

Acevedo, a first-team selection, is an education major and is the lone Longhorn representative on the conference's all-academic team. In 2004, Acevedo has started all 24 matches, and ranks third and fourth on the team, respectively, in digs per game (2.57) and kills per game (1.98). She is playing her first full season for the Longhorns after transferring from the University of Oregon in the summer of 2003 and then missing all but two matches in 2003 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in September.

The volleyball academic all-league squad consists of 37 first-team members, in addition to 15 on the second team. Student-athletes earned first-team honors by maintaining a 3.20 or better grade point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Members are nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in each of the two previous semesters while participating in at least 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the conference all-academic team. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.

Eleventh-ranked Texas, 21-3 overall on the season and in second place in the Big 12 with a 13-3 record, continues its 2004 season on Wednesday, Nov. 17, when it hosts Kansas in a 6:30 p.m. match at Gregory Gym.
