Hey, this
is Whitney Garvens, a senior
defensive specialist and No. 6 on The University of Texas volleyball
team. Welcome to my weekly diary. As the season rolls on, I will
fill you in on what's going on with the Texas volleyball team, on
and off the court. You only get to see what goes on at the matches,
so I'll be your source for what happens on the road, in the lockeroom,
at practice and in classes, all in addition to the matches. Hope
you enjoy the season!

This last week was both amazing and disheartening. After a great
road win up at Texas Tech on Wednesday (Nov. 26), we came home and
had a very short practice before heading off to be with family and
friends on Thanksgiving morning. Once Friday came around, and all
of the good food finally digested, we all came back to campus and
we had one of the best practices we had had all year!
Earlier in the year in October we took Kansas
State to five close games up in Manhattan , and knew coming into
Saturday's match (Nov. 29) was going to be a good one.
Up until this point in the season, I really
hadn't given anythought to the limited time I had left as a Longhorn
volleyball player, but honestly I didn't want to. I just wanted
to enjoy every moment and I know Kathryn (Wilson) felt the same.
At the beginning of the KSU match, the coaching
staff presented us with these awesome frames, which contained
our jersey and two action photos. It is something we will always
cherish, but can't even begin to explain what a great experience
being a UT athlete has been.
The match was amazing. We caried our emotions
over from Friday's practice and played our hearts out. It truly
was a team effort and one of the best wins Kathryn and I have
ever had here.
Ending our season with a winning record was
what we needed to get into the NCAA tournament. All we could do
that night was pray and cross our fingers as our fate would be
determined by the tournament committee and announced on Sunday
night.
We gathered at Bethany Howden's family's house,
and our nerves were running wild. The field of 64 teams was announced
but we weren't one of them. I really can't put into words what
that felt like.
This year was very difficult at times, but I'm
so proud of the way we stuck together and never gave up. Although
discouraged by the way the season ended, that last win is just
a glimpse of what is in store for the future. The talent level
of this team is enormous and will be so exciting to watch next
year.
This truly has been an amazing four years and
I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. On behalf of our
team, we would like to thank you all for your support this year
and look forward to seeing you next season.
