Player Journal: Day 9

  Innsbruck
  Innsbruck

Every time I travel, I loose the track of the days and this trip was not the exception. I just realized that it is May 27th and we have spent nine days in Europe, and the second day in Innsbruck, Austria. Today, we had the chance to hang around Innsbruck and play the Tirol volleyball club.

The day started at 8 a.m., at least for me and my roommates, Jessica (Curtis) and Erin (Larson). I am glad that we don’t take too much time to get ready because is nice to have at least 15 minutes of extra sleep. At 8:30 we met down stairs as a team and had some cereal, coffee, bread and juice for breakfast.  Later, at 9 a.m., we headed to downtown Innsbruck.

Once downtown, we explored the city. Some people in the team went shopping while others went on a hike before lunch time. I wanted to go for the hike but I got lost for the second time on the trip (the first was in Venice with Mira Topic). Instead, I had to go shopping with the half of the team who went shopping (Erin, Jessica, Mira, Sarah Holloway and Brandy Magee). I didn’t focus on the shopping and finding great bargins like my teammates did, instead I tried to look at the city from a cultural point of view.

The people in Austria are very different from the people of the cities that we have visited. Something I noticed is that people in Innsbruck don’t follow fashion trends like the people in Italy. They are more normal, I think.

The landscape of the city, I would say, is just beautiful. The city is placed in between mountains which resemble the Chinese wall.  Jenny Andrew, Bethany Howden and Whitney Garvens went on the hiking experience and had the chance to see the natural side of Austria . They said that the view from the mountains was gorgeous and that the Austrian food was good. Later at 3:30 p.m., we had to go to the hotel to rest a little before our match.

We played for about two hours. Erin Larson had to play as an outside hitter because we have no other player to play that position since Jen Christian left. Although she hasn’t played outside in a long time, she did a great job. We struggled a little during the match because we were trying new rotations but we ended up winning all four games that we played against Tirol (three normal games and then one extra for more practice).

After the game we traded our jerseys for theirs as a sign of sportsmanship. It was a good experience to play against Tirol because we got the chance to experience once more how different volleyball is in other parts of the world.

All of us had a great time here in Innsbruck, Austria. It is a beautiful place to live if you are in the stage of life where you just want to enjoy nature and the beauty of life.

Tomorrow we are going on another drive to Munich, Germany. It’s going to be a long but beautiful drive to see the transition from a country like Austria to a country like Germany.

We have only two more days on this trip. I am really excited to enjoy this last part of the trip, I think the most important part for the team. It will determine a lot of things for us as a family and as individuals because later in life we will take the experiences with us.

This was Dariam Acevedo reporting for you fans and family back home. See you in the fall. Oh, and of course: HOOK’ EM.
