Hey y’all!

Yesterday we left Venice around 9 a.m. to head to Innsbruck, Austria. The bus ride was about six hours long and everyone slept for the first two hours. Our first stop of the day was in a little town called Cortina, Italy, so we could get lunch on our way to Innsbruck. Cortina has been long known as one of the premiere winter havens in all of the world and is always associated with its tremendous skiing. The sights were just amazing.

The first thing I saw when I woke up to Cortina was the huge ski jump. Although nothing was covered in snow, the town definitely held an atmosphere of good food, cozy fires, and great company.

After our stop in Cortina we were on our way to Innsbruck, but not after one more stop at this field that was full of yellow flowers at the base of a couple of mountains. Our group got the urge to sing, “The hills are alive with the Sound of Music…” and was in full chorus before the guides and coaches could tell us to stop singing.

When we arrived in Innsbruck it was like looking into a huge valley that was covered with stores, malls, and big retail agencies. (Innsbruck is surrounded by massive mountains so the town looks like it’s in a hole.)

After jokingly being told that singing "The Sound of Music" in Austria was not allowed, the team got together to take a picture in front of the mountains and flower-covered fields in northern Italy.

We finally got to shower when we got to Innsbruck…that was a relief. After we put our stuff down at the Hotel Charlotte on the southeast section of the city, we headed out to dinner at a restaurant in Hungerburg, a small village that overlooks Innsbruck up in the mountains. After five days of pizza and pasta, I was really glad we got to eat something different for a change.

After dinner, we took the trolley down to an Internet café to check in with the rest of the world or just people back home.

So far Innsbruck looks like a place where a lot of young people live. It has an industrious side, but from what I have seen the stores are really focused on the young people’s market. I like the fact that everything is really modern in comparison with Italy where the old and new really collide most of the time.

The Austrian Alps are amazing. They tower above everything and make the busy city seem like a sleepy little town sometimes. One of the things that I really enjoy most about the city is the fact that there is a variety of food and most of the people here speak English.

Well that’s all I have for today, hope the rest of the journey is filled with more discoveries and new sites to see.

As they say in Europe, Ciao!
~ Jes
