Q&A with Jenny Andrew
By Meredith Gusa
Freshman setter Jenny Andrew has played every point
this season for the volleyball team, but was able to take time to talk
about the team, her role, and Louisiana family dining.
On the court
What type of leadership roles do you have on the court?
"The leadership role I have comes with the position I play (setter).
I'm like the quarterback of the team. I need to make sure everyone
stays calm and I need to have high energy. At the same time, when
the team isn't doing so well, I have to maintain their composure and
keep them in the game."
How much different is playing
collegiate volleyball than high school or club volleyball?
"The speed is definitely a lot faster in college and there is a
lot more strategy involved. I never realized how mental of game it is
until I came here."
Is there a lot of pressure
on you being the only setter and also being a freshman?
"I definitely felt the pressure when I first got here, but now
the upperclassmen have taken in the freshmen and we are all playing
for the same goal: to win. I don't really feel the pressure as
much anymore."
What are your thoughts
so far on how your team has come together this season?
"I think all the tragedies and hardships we have gone through have
only made us come closer together and I think that it will help us in
the long run. We have developed a tremendous amount of trust with
each other and we can count on everyone to be there for us if we need
them."
Off the court:
You always wanted to come to UT. What was it that drew you in?
"There wasn't a single thing I didn't like about Texas. I
really wanted to make sure I went to a university with a great business
school and a great volleyball program and UT fit the bill exactly.
You don't get much better than the McCombs School of Business, and when
I walked into Gregory Gym and saw all the white (championship) banners,
I was sold."
Do you have a favorite
reality television show?
"No, I don't really get into watching those shows. We have
study hall at night, which makes it hard to get into a lot of shows."
Do you have a favorite
childhood memory?
"Being back home in Louisiana with my family and having crawfish
boils and gumbo."
