The Jayhawks used a 7-0 run in the final game to take commanding lead and ultimately the match. "It's always tough when you lose in five games," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said after the match. "It was a tale of two matches, really. We were one team in games one and two, and an entirely different one in games three and four. We showed a lot of heart and determination coming back from a 2-0 deficit, but Kansas' jump server (Andi Rozum) got hot and went on a run in the final game and we couldn't recover." Down 2-0, Texas pulled out to a 11-4 lead in game three behind three kills apiece from Topic and Howden. The Longhorns continued to build the lead as the game wore on, aided by a total of 11 Howden kills. As a team, UT hit for .471 and held the Jayhawks to a .273 mark. In the fourth, it was much of the same as Texas moved ahead 14-9. Unlike the third game, however, Kansas rallied and tied the match at 21-21. Behind the serve of freshmen Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) and Jenny Andrew (Houston, Texas/Kingwood), the Longhorns closed out the game. Senior Kathryn Wilson (Macomb Township, Mich./Dakota) ended the game with a kill, her third of the final 10 UT points. In the final game, Kansas pulled ahead to 9-3 riding the serve of Rozum, who ran off six-straight points after a Josi Lima kill. UT got within five on a Howden kill, but the Jayhawks answered with 5-2 to take the game and the match. The Longhorns fell behind early in game one, trailing 12-6 before pulling to within one at 17-16. Texas used a 10-5 run to get back in the game, but KU benefited from it's own 12-6 run to take the first game, 30-24. Kansas came out hitting .300 in the game, while Texas suffered with a .077 mark. Texas improved its hitting in the second, jumping up to .378 for the stanza, but KU countered with its own .316 mark. The two teams made six errors each, but it was two straight points by the Jayhawks at 28-28 that made the difference. As a team, Kansas out-hit in the match UT, .270 to .263, bolstered by a .467 mark in the final game. At the same time, the Longhorns connected for a -.100 mark.
