Volleyball Magazine tabs Longhorn freshmen No. 2

  Texas Freshman
The premier volleyball publication selects UT's freshman class as the second-best in the nation.
AUSTIN, Texas - Volleyball Magazine has released its rankings of the nation's top recruiting classes for the 2003 incoming class - this year's freshmen - and head coach Jerritt Elliott's 2003 freshman class - Jenny Andrew (Houston, Texas/Kingwood), Leticia Armstrong (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart), Jessica Curtis (Marietta, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) and Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) - has been tabbed the second-best in the nation. Stanford University topped the list, and the Longhorns were followed by Wisconsin, Long Beach State, who round out the top four. The rankings were released in the October issue of the publication, which also included a profile of the Longhorns' junior All-American, Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia).

Three members of the freshman class have seen considerable action early in the 2003 season. Both Andrew and Magee have started every match this season. Magee, a middle blocker, leads the Longhorns in both hitting percentage (.346) and blocks (37) and has recorded 76 kills. Andrew - the team's lone setter - has played every point so far his season and has 375 sets on the season. Andrew was selected to the Longhorn Classic All-Tournament Team, as well as the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational All-Tournament Team with Magee. Curtis, an opposite hitter, has appeared in seven matches this season, starting three. She has 24 kills and 21 blocks.

The Volleyball Magazine ranking only considers players entering the University as freshmen. The Longhorns second-place showing does not reflect the additional player who entered the program this season, sophomore transfer Dariam Acevedo (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/ Oregon). Acevedo was selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in a vote by the league's 11 head coaches after earning Pac-10 All-Freshman Team accolades at Oregon last year.

Texas holds an overall record of 5-4, including a 1-0 record in Big 12 play. The Longhorns resume their 2003 season on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host No. 8 Nebraska in an 7 p.m. match in UT's Gregory Gym.
