With the win, UCLA improved to 8-1 overall and have won six straight games, while the Longhorns evened their record at 4-4 for the year. UCLA took an early lead in the first game, jumping ahead 12-9 before the Longhorns rally with a 5-2 run to pull even at 14-14. The Bruins then used back-to-back points to regain control and added to their lead with a four-point run on Laura Kroneberger's serve to put the game out of reach at 28-20. The Bruins benefited from a .417 hitting percentage, while limiting the Longhorns to a .238 mark. UCLA's Brittany Ringel paced the Bruins with five kills. Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led Texas with eight kills. The Bruins continued their strong play in the second game and built an 18-9 lead behind the strong play of juniors Ringel and Murphy. The Longhorns managed to climb back within seven points at 18-11, but UCLA used strong serving and a pointed attack to win the game with a 12-6 run. Murphy had five kills in the game, while the trio of Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac/Vladimir Nazor) and Howden had four kills each for all 12 of the Longhorns' kills. As in the first game, the Bruins used strong defense to limit UT to a .182 hitting percentage, while having a .382 mark of their own. Texas came out in the third game strong after the break, taking a 12-5 lead after setting the Bruins up for attack errors. UCLA managed to play all the way back and tie the game at 15-15 then take the lead at 20-19. The Bruins extended a three-point lead before Texas came back to tie the score at 23-23 on back-to-back points on Whitney Garven's (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) serve. The two teams battled back and forth and fought through four ties, before UCLA strung together back-to-back points at 28-28 to take the third game and the match. Howden had a game-high 15 kills, while Magee and Topic each had 10. Magee and Jessica Curtis (Marietta, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) each had three blocks on the night. The Bruins' Cira Wright had four blocks for the game high. At the conclusion of the match, an all-tournament team of UT-Arlington's Heather Dunn, UCLA's Krystal McFarland and Chrissie Zartman, and Texas' Jenny Andrew (Houston, Texas/Kingwood), Magee and Howden was announced. Murphy was chosen as the Most Valuable Player. Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when the Longhorns open the 2003 Big 12 Conference season against Iowa State.
