Texas 3, Houston 0 » Box score
Four Cougars had eight or more kills, as Kelly McAnelly had nine, and Cinthia Piva, Loure Dews and Mary Cates each added eight. The game marked Houston's second trip and third game overall in Gregory Gym this season as the Cougars also participated in Texas' Longhorn Classic on Sept. 5-6. Texas and Houston did not face each other that weekend, however. In game one, Texas (7-5) grew a 6-3 lead to a 12-5 advantage over Houston (4-10). The Longhorns held at least a six-point lead for the rest of the game, and closed out the stanza with a 6-2 run highlighted by three kills each from Topic and Magee. Both teams hit well in the first game, but Texas' .390 hitting advantage bettered Houston's .276. Magee had eight kills in the first game, while Topic and Howden each had four. After Houston tied game two at 16-16, the Longhorns used a 9-4 run to take control of the game. Topic had three kills in the run to pace the attack. Howden ended the game with an ace for the Longhorns. Both players led the UT attack throughout the game as Topic had six kills and Howden had five. Texas hit .317 in the second game, while holding the Cougars to a .186 mark. In the final game, Texas exploded out of a timeout when the score was tied at 19-19, outscoring Houston 11-3 to take the game and the match. After the Longhorns built a 10-6 lead to open the game, the Cougars came back to tie the score at 11-11. The two teams battled back and forth until Texas took control down the stretch. The Longhorns' defense limited Houston's hitters to a .064 attack percentage, while the offense clicked at a .317 mark. Topic continued her strong play from the second, connecting for five kills. "Our defense played very well tonight," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said after the match. "We have been putting a lot of time and effort into passing in practice, and our effort showed again tonight. For the most part, we were on target which enabled our offense to function in its systems. Our libero, Erin Larson, had an excellent match tonight, as did the rest of our team. This was a great match and Houston battled throughout." The Longhorns return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they take on Big 12 rival Texas A&M at 7 p.m. in Gregory Gym on UT's campus. |
