AUSTIN, Texas - Eighth-ranked Nebraska (10-1, 2-0 Big 12) used 16 service aces and capitalized on the Longhorns' .099 hitting percentage to defeat Texas, 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-19) in Big 12 volleyball action on Saturday night before 1,960 fans in UT's Gregory Gym. The Cornhuskers' Jennifer Saleaumua had a game-high 13 kills to pace the NU attack.

"Nebraska played very well tonight and deserves their No. 8 ranking," head coach Jerritt Elliott said. "We had a lot of errors tonight and our hitting just wasn't where it should be."

Texas (5-5, 1-1 Big 12) came out strong and took control of the first game early, building a 9-5 lead before Nebraska rallied back to tie the game at 10-10. The two teams traded points until the Cornhuskers went on a 12-1 run to close the game. NU used five aces during that stretch to take the lead. Both teams were snakebitten by poor hitting, with the Longhorns edging NU with a .129 average. Nebraska had a .125 mark. UT's Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas/Westlake) had five kills to lead both teams in the stanza.

Nebraska jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the second game and then strung together five straight points to move ahead 26-15. UT managed its longest rally of the game two points to pull to 26-18, but Nebraska won the final three points of the game to take a 2-0 lead headed into the break. UT continued to struggle with its hitting, generating a .024 average for the game. Nebraska had a .233 mark.

Texas took its last lead of the game at 6-3 in the third game, before Nebraska began taking advantage of Longhorn hitting errors. NU had two separate 4-0 runs early in the game and moved ahead 13-9. The Cornhuskers closed the match on a 17-10 run, including a 5-0 run to move to 28-18. Saleumaua had six kills in the final game, while the Longhorns were paced by Howden's five. UT raised its hitting percentage to .179 in game three, while NU continued to roll at .387.

Howden led the Longhorns with 12 kills on the night. Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) had 15 kills. Christina Houghtelling and Saleaumua each had four aces for NU. Sophomore Dariam Acedvedo left the match midway through the second game with a left knee injury. She will be further evaluated on Monday.

Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24 when the Longhorns travel to Norman, Okla. to take on Oklahoma. UT's first Big 12 Conference road match of the season begins at 7 p.m.
