AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) had a career-high 13 kills and added four blocks as Texas defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-0 (30-17, 30-20, 30-23), in the first game of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational at Gregory Gym before 204 fans on Thursday morning. The win was the Longhorns' first three-game win of the year. Texas (3-3) cruised to a first-game win, building a 17-5 lead to open the stanza. The Longhorns benefited from a .448 hitting percentage (16 kills on 29 attempts) in the game, while limiting the Islanders to a .061 mark. The trio of senior Kathryn Wilson (Macomb Township, Mich./Dakota) and juniors Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia/Vladimir Nazor) and Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led UT with a total of 12 kills in the first game. For the Islanders, Melanie Travis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and Sarah Hill (Plano, Texas/Canyon Creek Christian Acad.) each had three kills. TAMU-CC (3-4) came out stronger in the second game and took a 5-2 lead off Jenna Thoele's (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) serve. The Longhorns rebounded with a 10-1 run to take a 17-10 lead and control of the game. Magee set the tone for the Longhorns with six kills in the game. Howden added four kills and one solo block. As in the first game, UT had a strong attack percentage - .429 while the Islanders were held to a .194 mark. Texas took a 6-2 lead in the third game only to see TAMU-CC rally to build its own 11-10 advantage. The Longhorns responded with its own 9-1 run to take control of the game. Howden served six-straight points for UT during the run. Howden finished the match with 13 kills, while freshman setter Jenny Andrew (Houston, Texas/Kingwood) had 38 assists. The Longhorns ended the match with a .396 attack percentage, while the Islanders had a .115 mark. Round-robin play in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational will continue with three matches later on Thursday. No. 9 UCLA will play two matches before the Longhorns' next match, facing UT-Arlington at noon, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 5 p.m. Texas' second game on Thursday will be against UT-Arlington at 7 p.m. in Gregory Gym. Friday's matches will feature Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. UT-Arlington at 5 p.m. and Texas vs. UCLA at 7 p.m. |
