Longhorns Preview: No. 21 Texas A&M THE LONGHORNS IN BRIEF Texas enters Wednesday (Oct. 1) night's match with a 7-5 record overall (2-1 in Big 12 play). Friday night (Sept. 26), the Longhorns defeated Houston, 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-22). Four of the team's five losses have come to ranked teams (No. 16 Long Beach State, 3-1; No. 21 Notre Dame, 3-0; No. 9 UCLA, 3-0; and No. 8 Nebraska, 3-0). Junior All-American Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia/Vladimir Nazor) leads the Longhorns in kills this season with 182 (4.57/game) and service aces (20). Freshman middle blocker Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) tops the team in both hitting percentage (.354) and blocks (47). Freshman setter Jenny Andrew (Houston, Texas/Kingwood) is the team's only setter and has 481 assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Erin Larson (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) has 125 digs to lead the team. TEXAS A&M IN BRIEF Texas A&M enters the match ranked 21st overall in the latest USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll and on a three-match winning streak. The Aggies have an overall record of 10-3 and a 2-1 mark in Big 12 play. Texas A&M opened the season with a 4-0 record before suffering its first loss of the year - to Michigan (3-0). The Aggies won three more matches before dropping back-to-back matches to No. 1 USC (3-0) and No. 8 Nebraska (3-2), the latter which opened conference play for both schools. Head coach Laurie Corbelli's squad is lead by sophomore outside hitter Laura Jones and junior outside hitter Melissa Munsch. Jones has 218 kills (4.45/game), 153 digs and 19 aces to lead the team, while Munsch has 178 kills (3.71/game) an 63 blocks. Junior setter Lexy Beers leads the Aggies with 370 sets, while senior outside hitter Carol Price has the team's highest hitting percentage (.300). AGAINST THE AGGIES Texas has an all-time record of 54-20 against Texas A&M, including a 26-5 record at home. A&M has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two schools. Until their victory at home last Oct. 9, the Longhorns had lost the previous six meetings dating back to 1999. LAST MEETING WITH A&M Texas A&M defeated Texas, 3-1, in College Station on Nov. 27, 2002 in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Longhorns captured the first game, 30-23, before the Aggies rebounded with three-straight games for the victory (30-25, 31-29, 30-27). Kathy Hahn recorded a game- and career-high 27 kills, and Mira Topic added 21, but they were not enough to help the team to the victory. UT out-hit A&M, .303 - .280, and had 10 more kills (78-86). Five Texas A&M players recorded 10 or more kills, led by Carol Price and Laura Jones, who both had 14 kills. LAST TIME OUT Texas defeated Houston, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 26 at Gregory Gym. The Longhorns cruised to victories of 20, 23 and 22 before a crowd of 1,245. Four players - Brandy Magee (career-high 16), Mira Topic (13), Kathryn Wilson (10) and Bethany Howden (10) - each recorded double-figure kills for UT. Erin Larson had 14 digs in a great defensive display by the Longhorns. Wilson had five blocks, while Magee added four as UT out-blocked UH 11.0 - 2.0. Texas benefited from a .341 attack percentage and limited the Cougars to a .160 mark. SISTER-SISTER Kathy Hahn could possibly look across the net on Wednesday (Oct. 1) when Texas A&M takes the court and see a familiar face. Her younger sister Christi is a freshman middle blocker on the Aggies' squad. Should Christi check into the game, it would mark the first time Kathy would play against her sister. Christi only has seen action in three games this season. TAKING OUT HER AGGIE-RESSION Kathy Hahn has played exceptionally well against Texas A&M in her career, positing some of her best performances against the Aggies. In her freshman year, she recorded a 16-kill, five-block game, before following that up with a 19-kill, seven-block performance in the teams' first meeting last season. In the second meeting of 2002, Hahn set her career high in kills with 27, while also adding two digs and two blocks. In those three matches, Hahn has recorded a .519 hitting percentage and played in all 13 games. ACEVEDO TO MISS REST OF SEASON Sophomore outside hitter Dariam Acevedo will miss the remainder of the 2003 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in her left knee during the Longhorns' match against No. 8 Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 20. The injury occurred during the second game of the match when Acevedo collided with a stanchion supporting the net while attempting to reach a ball. Acevedo will undergo surgery at a date to be determined. Acevedo was playing in only her second Texas match of the season after participating in the World Under-20 Championships for Puerto Rico, Sept. 6-14. She was tabbed the 2003 Big 12 Conference Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the conference's coaches after transferring from the University of Oregon during the summer. In five games for the Longhorns, Acevedo recorded eight kills (1.60/game), 15 digs, two service aces and one block and started both matches. COUNTING DOWN TO MILESTONES With three more victories, Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott will reach two coaching milestones: his 50th win at Texas and his 100th career win overall. Every coach in Longhorns history has accumulated at least 62 wins while coaching the volleyball team at UT. LONGHORNS HAVE LOYAL FANS Texas' fans are some of the most loyal in the country, according to figures compiled weekly by the sports information department at the University of Wisconsin. The Longhorns are currently averaging 1,279 fans per match at Gregory Gym, ranking 20th nationally. Hawai'i leads the country with an average of 7,165. There are 25 teams nationally that average 1,000 or more fans per match. Additionally, all but one of the team's matches - a 10 a.m. contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 11 - have attracted 1,000 or more fans. Eight of UT home dates are listed among the top crowds in the country. UP NEXT Texas will hit the road on Saturday, Oct. 4 for a 8 p.m. (Central) match at Colorado in Boulder, Colo. |
