Austin, Texas --
Four-time University of Texas volleyball All-American and 2000 Olympian
Demetria (Dee) Sance was one of five athletes inducted into the San
Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 7.
Sance began her volleyball career at San Antonio's John Jay High School,
where she led her team to a Class 5A state championship as a freshman
in 1991.
She came to Texas and won virtually every award a volleyball player
could in her time at UT, including a conference and national sweep as
a freshman in 1995 when she was named Southwest Conference Freshman
of the Year, All-Time Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year, National
Freshman of the Year, and Freshman All-American after putting together
one of the most memorable first-year campaigns in the history of collegiate
volleyball. During her freshman year, the Longhorns finished as the
National Runner-up, falling to Nebraska in the 1995 title match.
The 6-1 outside hitter is the Texas all-time leader in three categories
with 2,013 kills, 4,783 attacks, and 1,614 digs. She was a four-time
AVCA All-American selection and was a member of the USA National Women's
Volleyball team. In the 2000 Olympics, Sance was a member of Team USA
that finished fourth in Sydney.
Fellow hall of fame inductees with Sance included two other former UT
greats. Linus Baer was a 1967 Texas football team captain and the star
running back as he led his Lee High School football team in the "Game
of the Century" - the infamous Lee-Brackenridge bi-district playoff
game in 1963. Johnny Moore was the team MVP for UT in 1978 and 1979
and is the all-time assist leader for the San Antonio Spurs. Other inductees
were Warren McVea, who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs
in 1970, and John "Mule" Miles, who played for the Chicago
American Giants in the Negro Baseball League. Former Longhorn All-American
and current Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes was honored
as the San Antonio Express-News Sportsman of the Year.
