9/7/02 Texas 3, UT-San Antonio 0
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas volleyball won easily over the Road Runners of Texas-San Antonio, 30-6, 30-14, 30-17, in front of 950 fans at Gregory Gym Saturday afternoon. "I was happy to see that we took care of business," said head coach Jerritt Elliott. "With a young team, you worry about playing down to your opponent's level. We came out from the start and dominated. It was nice to see everyone contributing." Texas (5-1) set two records during the match against UTSA. The Longhorns set a season-low for hitting errors for a match, committing seven errors. Texas hit for an impressive .420 for the match, the best so far this season. Sophomores Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia/Vladimir Nazor) and Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led the offensive charge with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. This was Texas' second match of the season in which every player on the court had a dig. Howden came up with a team-leading nine digs while Topic, LaTonya Coates (Bangor, Mich./Bangor Public), Erin Larson (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) tallied seven each. In the two matches Texas has played in the Longhorn Classic, the team is averaging 12 aces per match. The Longhorns set a new school record for lowest points allowed since the implementation of rally scoring in a game during game one. The previous record of 30-9 was set against Southwest Texas on Sept. 4, 2001 at Gregory Gym. UT had five aces in the match, two by Topic and Caron Blotch (Franklin, Ind./Franklin). Texas also was balanced on the front line, only committing one hitting error. Topic led the attack with four kills. Texas continued to dominate in game two, notching 16 kills and 12 digs. Topic again led in kills with five. The Horns recorded five aces again in the second game with Howden and Topic serving two apiece. The offense kept rolling during game three. Sophomore Abbie Schindler (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) collected 13 of her season-high 22 assists in game three. UT slammed 16 kills in the game while coming up with 18 digs. In the first match of the morning session, Utah State (2-3) defeated UTEP in four games, 30-27, 30-17, 24-30, 30-25.
