White Defeats Orange in Annual Scrimmage

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Texas newcomers Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and Mira Topic (Kambelovac, Croatia/Vladimir Nazor) paced the white team to a 3-1 victory over the orange team at the annual Orange-White scrimmage on Saturday evening at Gregory Gymnasium.

Howden, a 6-2 freshman middle blocker, recorded 21 kills while Topic, a 6-2 freshman outside hitter, added 15 kills and a team-leading 18 digs on the evening. Senior outside hitters, Katia Lara (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Jucelino) and Gipy Duarte (Lima, Peru) also contributed with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Duarte led the team with three service aces. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kathryn Wilson (Macomb Township, Mich./Dakota) and freshman outside hitter LaTonya Coates (Bangor, Mich./Bangor) also recorded double figures in kills for the white team with 14 and 10 apiece.

White took the first two games, 30-25 and 30-18, before losing the third game 26-30. White came back strong in game four for a 30-20 victory. The teams played a fifth game following the match to 15 points in which white defeated orange 16-14.

Texas officially opens its 2001 campaign when it faces Purdue at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash., on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CST. The Longhorns' first home match is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, against Southwest Texas State in the Culver's Frozen Custard Classic.
