FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Former Longhorn Jane (Winkel) Davis Joins Texas Volleyball Coaching Staff AUSTIN,
Texas -- Former University of Texas volleyball star Jane (Winkel)
Davis has joined the Longhorns staff as a volunteer assistant coach,
head coach Jerritt Elliott announced Tuesday. "We're
excited to have Jane be a part of the Texas Volleyball coaching staff
for a lot of different reasons," said Elliott. "Obviously
we're excited to have a Texas-Ex on the staff. It's important for us
to keep the alumni involved since it's that group of former players
that made Texas Volleyball such a proud and successful program. Jane
has a good understanding of the game as well. She brings a lot of excitement,
experience and enthusiasm to our staff and we feel lucky to have her." Winkel
enjoyed a distinguished four-year playing career (1994-97) in which
she earned a pair of First Team All-Big 12 honors (1996, 97) and helped
Texas advance to the 1995 NCAA Championship match. She served as team
captain on UT's 1997 Big 12 Champion squad and closed her career ranked
second on UT's all-time block assists chart. She was successful in the
classroom as well, twice being named First Team All-Academic Big 12. The Longhorns open their 2001 campaign on Friday, Aug. 31, when they battle Purdue in the University of Washington's Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash. Prior to the season opener, Texas fans can meet and greet the 2001 Longhorns on Thursday, Aug. 23, when Elliott and his staff host an informal practice and dinner open to all Longhorn fans. Held at Gregory Gym, the team will practice from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. followed by a sit-down barbeque dinner at 6:15 p.m. For more information or to reserve space at the meal, please contact Molly Lamphear at (512) 471-9275.
