Cochran Joins Texas Volleyball Staff AUSTIN,
Texas -- Former Penn State All-American Christy Cochran has been
named assistant women's volleyball coach at The University of Texas,
Longhorns head coach Jerritt Elliott announced Tuesday. Cochran rounds
out Elliott's Longhorns coaching staff, which includes former Wisconsin
assistant Robert Pulliza, who was hired on May 14. "We're
extremely excited to have added Christy as the final piece of our coaching
staff," said Elliott. "I believe she has the potential to
be one of the brightest young coaches in the collegiate game. Her character
and charisma are unmatched, and she's going to be a phenomenal recruiter.
Christy will add a special spark and a great dose of leadership to our
young, developing team." Cochran
enjoyed a standout four-year playing career at Penn State where she
was a two-time all-district selection and 1998 Volleyball Magazine All-American.
As a senior in 1998, she captained the Nittany Lions to an undefeated
regular season before falling to Long Beach State in the National Championship
match. Overall, Cochran appeared in three final fours and helped Penn
State to a four-year record of 127-14 (.901) -- the second-best four-year
mark in school history. During
the past two years, Cochran played professional volleyball in Europe
and the United States. In 2000-2001 she played in Oporto, Portugal,
for Castelo da Maia, helping her team win the Portuguese Championship
and advance to the round of 16 in the European Cup. A year earlier,
she was a member of the "Dream Team" that was selected to
represent the inaugural season of the United States Professional Volleyball
League. Born Nov. 8, 1976, Cochran earned her bachelor1s degree from Penn State in 1999 with a major in communications and a minor in sport science. She also was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a Dean1s List student at Penn State. Cochran attended Bethlehem Catholic High School in Bethlehem, Pa., and last year was named one of Eastern Pennsylvania1s Top 100 Sports People of the Century by the Easton Express Times. |
