4/6/05 Texas Relays: Day one recap · Live results AUSTIN, Texas - The first day of the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays was awash with successful current and former Texas Longhorn athletes, highlighted by wins from Ryan Wilson in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase and Carlee Clark in the women’s 1500 meters. Wilson, making his debut in the event, clocked 9:20.92, while Clark outkicked the field over the final 150 meters to win in a personal best 4:35.06. Former Longhorn distance ace Ben Dawson, who now runs for Nike, took top honors in the invitational men’s 10,000 meters at 30:19.54. The men’s 1500 saw Texas State’s James Ortiz zip past John Arnold and Jake Morse of Texas with 20 meters to go to grab gold in 3:51.91. New Zealand Olympic marathoner Liza Hunter-Galvan, who was 51st at Athens in 2004, demolished the field in the invitational women’s 10,000 with a 35:13.33, the fastest time in the event at the Relays since 1996. After the first five events of the men’s decathlon Texas holds the top two spots, with ’04 NCAA runner-up Trey Hardee leading at 4127, 75 points ahead of Donovan Kilmartin. Washington State’s Diana Pickler, who won the Texas 5A girls’ 100H in 2001, leads after the first day of the women’s heptathlon with 3354 points, and her sister, Julie, stands third at 3252.
