Freshmen duo victorious in finals of Rice Invitational HOUSTON, Texas – Freshmen Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) and Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) used an 8-3 advantage over Amrit Narmishan and Guillaumme Tonelli of Tyler Junior College to win the consolation bracket of flight B doubles at the Seventh Annual Met/Rice Indoor Invitational at the Downtown Club at the Met on Sunday, Jan. 23. The top-seeded duo advanced to the final round after opening the day with an 8-6 semifinal victory over Javier Herrera and Marcus Lunt of Tyler Junior College. In other doubles action, sophomore Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) claimed the flight A title by default after their final round opponents withdrew from the tournament. Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, freshman Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) and sophomore Garrett Snyder (Newport Beach, Calif.) were forced to withdraw from their semifinal match due to illness. The Texas men’s tennis team will return to the courts on Saturday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Dallas to take on SMU for the start of the dual-match season.
